Patch change day and headaches

I could really use some suggestions here.

I've been on the Climara 0.1 patch for about six weeks. I have to change it after five days instead of seven, but have been feeling pretty good until the last two weeks or so. Since then, the day I change I get an awful headache that lasts all day and into the night. I'm guessing this is due to hormonal fluctuations, and I've been leaving the old patch on with the new one for 12 - 24 hours to try and smooth out the transition, but this hasn't worked for the last three times, in fact, the headaches seem to be getting worse. I was never a headachey person before my TAH/BSO. I hate it that I found an hrt that seemed to be working and it's already giving me problems!

Would switching to another transdermal hrt such as a daily gel or cream improve the situation? Or would I just have headaches every day instead of every five days? What have you all experienced?

Patch change day and headaches

Hi Sciencegeek, I don't think I would leave the old patch on longer than 12 hours. If you look at Climara's website that's about the time the new patch is up and running so to speak. I could tell almost to the twelve hours when the new patch started to work. That has gotten better (I change every 6 days). I can still feel when the patch is wearing out but I feel so much better. It will be two months soon since I've been on the Climara before that I was on Vivelle. Patience is so hard here in the Jungle. I'm sure the headaches are from the fluctuations but I'm not sure what to do about them. I wish I could be more help.

Take Care,
Teresa

Patch change day and headaches

Hey Sciencegeek
I am having the same sort of problem. I get headaches the day I am due to switch my patch(Vivelle). Sometimes the night before. Today it has been really bad I think because I also just lowered my dose last week back to .075. I had headaches before my surgery but I am still trying to see if I can figure out how to stop them.
When I was taking Premarin I did not have any problems with headaches. So I think it is the fluctations in the patch.
I have found that drinking grapefruit juice has helped (wish I had some today). I know it sounds crazy. And maybe I am. From what I read grapefruit may increase the amount of estrogen though so you should check with your doctor first. It can increase the side effects of too much estrogen. Same as with cholesterol medicine. My doctor said it was ok to drink a couple of days a week. Someone recommended Luna Bars. I think it is because they have soy in them. I bought some to try. I willing to try different things to see what works. But I have to remember what works for one may not work me.
Let me know if you find anything that helps. I would go back on Premarin if I could.
