coughing

Yesterday, day 6 after surgery for TAH/LSO, I woke for the first time almost pain free bar some minor period like aches. All was great until the people who own the paddock over the back decided to slash the grass. I ended up with a sneezing and coughing fit *ouch*. At the time I felt like something 'popped' inside, followed but a nasty burning pain that stayed in my lower right side.

Two questions, what is the best way to deal with coughing, I tried to support my belly by pressing a pillow against it, but it seemed to do little good.

The other question is, how would I know if I've done any damage to internal stitchers? I've had a terrible night with severe burning pain in that lower light side and have that horrid bloated feeling back that I had with wind pain up until day four as well as nausea which is the first time I've had that since the op. The pain doesn't even want to ease with meds so that worries me, but I don't want to be paranoid about it either (plus we live rural and my doctor is almost two hours drive away)

So girls, what do I do next time I'm struck by a coughing fit, because this pain really sucks and once it settles I really don't want to face it again. Can somthing as simple as coughing do much damage?

Oh, I hate that for you. I would call the doctor's head nurse and tell her your concerns, if something needs to be fixed, you would want it done
right away and if everything is ok, you need someone who can tell you what you will feel, etc if some kind of internal stitching came undone.

I just had my hysterectomy, done laparascopically Monday.
I had to clear my throat and whoa, it hurt.

Take care of you

coughing

Hey there, I don't believe coughing could do too much damage but I did have a friend crack a rib once due to a terrible cold. My advice would be to call your doc. I had my surgery (TAH) on July 9th and I somehow I was able to deal with the coughing situation even though it wasn't too often. The pillow (Firm) helped a lot. From what I have read on this site, the best possible way of finding out if there is a problem with stiches is that you will see minor spotting. Good luck and I know you will be just fine.

I got Bronchitis 2 weeks out. Used a pillow and saw the Doctor who said not to worry too much about it. I myself have no doubt I popped the odd stitch and whislt not preferrred is probably not too serious so long as it's minimal. Still hurts to sneeze at 13 weeks out.....TAH/BSO.

Thanks heaps for your replies, they eased my mind quite a bit. Feeling a lot of pain at the moment but I think the coughing just stirred things up a bit, I have no spotting so I guess I just need to give it a couple of days to settle again. Bummer, I was doing pretty darned well in the pain department too, was quite pleased with myself for awhile there. Lol

You know what I did ? I sneezed !!! ha ha
I felt it coming and I thought oh no, because when
I sneeze, they're strong.
I just put my hands on tummy to hold my self,
I just knew it was going to hurt. It wasn't too painful,
but thats because when I sneezed it didn't come out strong,
but rather weak. ha ha

take good care

Oh, man. Sneezing would hurt if it's a big one. I found even yawning hurt a little when I first had surgery. I'm ringing my doctor today to see if she can prescribe something stronger then panadol (tylenol). Thats all I've been taking since I left hospital and it really doesn't help, but I'm allergic to codine and ibuprofen gives me reflux so any other store bought pain releif won't work. I think the coughing fit just pulled some cut muscles but **** I'm sore.
