Sick before surgery??

Hey all! So I was told that I am not allowed to get sick before going in. Well I am booked for monday the 8th and am getting a cold. Stinking kids lol
Anyway, what is the big deal if I have a cold anyway? And/or does it depend more on how sick a person is? I don't want to have to reschedule it because it could take awhile. Any suggestions on how to fight NOT getting sick??? Or getting rid of it real quick??

Sick before surgery??

stay hydrated. vitamin c and lots of hand washing.

Going under when sick is very dangerous , it can depress your resp. system and make it harder to wake up.

Good luck!

Also, surgery is a major assualt on your body and you want your immune system in full gear. A healthy immune system helps you fight off infections that you are more suspectible to after surgery.

you wouldnt want to have surgery with any type of respiratory illness. your immune system is down, you can develop pneumonia..and you really dont want to start coughing after abdominal surgery. if you have a full blown cold, your dr and anesthesiologist will want to reschedule your surgery.

Sick before surgery??

Hmm, thanks. I am dosing big time today on vit. c and have been using the hand sanitizer stuff to try to keep it at bay. I found out you can't take garlic pills before surgery!! Didn't know that but I guess it thins the blood too much
Thanks ladies, I will just pray real hard not to get sicker!!

I am sorry to hear that you feel a cold coming on. I want to tell you that you wouldn't want to have the surgery if you are doing any coughing. I developed cold symptoms with cough 3 and a half weeks post-op and It was murder on my abdomen when I coughed. I was really worried about the healing process with the cough. I had no fever during this, so might have been allergies or a combination of both.

You should call your regular Dr. and tell them that you are getting sick and you have a surgery scheduled and ask them if they can recommend anything you can take. Of course they might want to see you, but that isn't a bad idea either because if it is more then just a cold, you will need antibiotics.

You have the same date I do! I started getting little cough and earache when that darn Gustav went through. I'm hoping that it will clear up now that the weather has cleared up.

With a little Vitamin C we're going to make! The 8th is our day!!!
