Stopped HRT ~ how long will menopause symptoms last?

[i]hello hystersisters, after reading your posts, on weight loss, i thought i'd share my thoughts with you. i am 26 yrs post opt a complete abdomnial hysterectomy, bso. i had no cancer, just several fibroids etc...i was started on delestrogen injections right after surgery. The injections made me feel sick to my stomach and therefore i lost weight. i weighed only 105 lbs when i left hospital, i am only 5'0 so i didn't look to skinny then, well after about 5yrs, i ask my dr, to switch me to patches, as i had researched that all oral estrogens can cause nausea, i was put on vivelle 0.5 patches and did very well with them. Gained my 8 lbs back and felt much better. My dr retired, and so i started using my family dr, who took me off my patches a year and a half ago. Oh my how i have suffered, i dropped 10 lbs bam just like that, and have felt like i have electric shock waves shooting out of my body everywhere...these are not normal hot flashes, tryed to get my dr to give me a script for patches, he says nope your body is estrogen saturated!!!! anyone ever heard of that? Does anyone know how long after stoping hrt, afetr surgical menopause these symptoms will last? i pray not for the rest of my like!! yikes, the research i've found says they believe it to be two years. anyone concur with these findings or anyone have any personal input for me?

Have you considered finding a Dr who is more knowledgeable about surgical menopause and HRT? If there is not a Dr there in your town, it might be worth it to drive somewhere else. How did he determine that you are "estrogen saturated"? Did he test you? Coffeyville is only about an hour and a half from Tulsa. It might be worth the drive there, if there is not anyone closer, to feel better again.

Since I am on Estrogen, and don't have any inclination to discontinue, I can't answer your questions about having stopped HRT. Here is a link to Hormone Resources though, if you want to read a bit.

The shocks usually lead up to a hot flash and many menopausal women have them. Instead of going back on HRT have you explored other treatments for the symptoms with your Doctor? I would highly recommend a doctor who is an expert in hormone related issues. A general practitioner is clueless often times when it comes to hormone therapy. There have been studies showing that HRT can prolong menopause. Menopause symptoms can last up to ten years in some women. Power-surge has a compiled list of supplements and what they can do in the treatment of meno symptoms. Maybe have a read and discuss alternatives with a different Dr. You might also talk to your Dr about ssri, often times they alleviate meno symptoms. There is a wealth of information out there and other treatments besides HRT.

There is a big difference in natural menopause and surgical menopause. While natural menopause can take many years because the ovaries are slowly cutting back on the amount of hormones they produce, they will still continue to produce estrogen for the rest of a woman's life as long as they remain healthy. Surgical menopause is immediate and extreme. Some of the symptoms can last a lifetime without estrogen replacement. My estrogen therapy keeps my levels at a normal POST-menopausal level. It helps me to think more clearly and just improves my general quality of life.

There are lots of women without ovaries who manage without estrogen replacement, but it is usually out of medical necessity that they choose to go without any estrogen at all. However, there are some women who do well without any estrogen replacement. It is a personal decision.
