Disgusted!

Hi all,

I am 4 weeks post-op from TAV/BSO surgery. After I had my staples removed the nurse casually said I had a wound (hole) and that a visiting nurse will have to come every day and pack it. I have had a nurse come every day and it was going well, but the width and length of the opening narrowed dramatically but the depth is still there.
And now for the TMI part: have had a lot of drainage..brown/tannish clolored AND a HORRIBLE odor that goes through 3-4 guaze layers. The Dr. and his nurse is aware of this and said we will just have to keep an eye on it. But this has been going on for 2 weeks now and the smell is almost unbearable. Yest. my visiting nurse said I will probably have to have a medical procedure t o close the wound b/c this is going on too long. Not to mention the fact that I can't even go out in public b/c of the stench..
I am just so disgusted. I had originally told the people I work with that I would be back next week, but of course no way thats happening. It's been a tough year for me medically.. Just had major surgergy 9 months ago for a broken elbow due to an accident..
ok, now i'm rambling.
just need to hear from other sisters who have gone through anything remotely similar. I'm trying to remain positive, but its so hard.
thanks for listening!

Disgusted!

I too have had problems with my incision. I had my staples removed on a Wednesday and the next morning I awoke to find my underwear all wet. Went to the dr. and my incision had not opened but it was leaking. The dr. said that in oder for it to heal properly it needed to be opened. He opened about two inches of the incision and some stuff drained (not providing any details). I did not feel anything as I was told the tissue around the area of concern was dead and that was the reason it was not healing properly. I have spent the past three weeks getting it packed everyday (2x daily). When I started it was 3 cm deep and is fortunately much smaller now. The issue now is that my visiting nurse is concerned that the top outside layer seems to want to close and the inside is not totally healed. Monitoring it closely and praying that this heals properly. I also notice a smell that seems to be getting better as time goes on.
Has the dr. seen you recently? During my first week I was at the dr. office twice to check on how the incision was responding to the bandaging. I know one of the major concerns is that this can turn into a nasty infection if it does not heal properly.
Good luck and hang in there. I completely undersand how frustrating this can all be.
