What is the recovery time for a TAH?

Hi everyone,

I just got my surgery date for a TAH today but my doctor was pretty vague about recovery time. He said, "Well, it's like your c-section. You didn't have a hard time with that." Which I didn't, but I had twins who stayed in the hospital for two weeks, so I wasn't doing too much besides seeing them during the day and sleeping all night.

My sister is at the other extreme (she had a TAH two years ago) and said "You'll be out of work for six weeks!" She was out of work for six weeks but she is a nurse and has to move patients post-op. I'm either at a laptop or giving presentations, neither of which are extremely strenuous.

What is the average recovery time? I need to let my boss know how long I'll be out and if I can work from home sooner than coming back into the office.

I guess I'm not completely comfortable with having a hysterectomy yet. I understand from an intellectual perspective why this surgery will solve my health issues (anemia being the biggest problem) but I'm worried I will not feel better or I may even be worse off afterwards. I know no one can give me a guarantee on that but if I'm getting by now without a lot of problems, I feel like I could wait.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

most people that have a tah seem to need the 6 weeks or longer. sometimes it depends on if you keep your ovaries or not. theres always exceptions but its really too hard to predict.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

It totally varies from person to person. Like dresseupinblue said, it's too hard to predict. I am only 10 days-post-op and feel like I could return to a desk job if I had to. I just took our dogs for a 45 minute walk around the neighborhood and feel great!!! (My husband had to hold the leashes of course.) I don't really need naps, but I do sleep a little longer at night, and take little rest-period during the day. But I feel almost normal except for the incision. I think my recovery might have been smoother than normal, but I was expecting to be completely bed-ridden for 2-weeks, and am surprised at how good I feel. (I also didn't have general anaesthesia which I think helped speed my recovery along.) It's really hard to say, the best thing to do is expect the worse, and hope for the best.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

Hi;

I get the feeling you are not sure to have this surgery or not, in which case it would be a good idea if you had a second opinion with a different doctor as to your options. this is major surgery and you should feel comfortable with your decision.

I had a SAH and I took a little over 11 weeks to recover due to complications (my incision took a long time to heal), each person is different, but if I had to tell my boss, I would say I needed 8 weeks, just to be on the safe side.

I pray for Gods guidance in your decision making

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

I had a TAH/BSO with a vertical incision and was out of work 5 1/2 weeks. I am a secretary at a school. I started work on Monday and when I get home at night I am completely exhausted and my tummy is burning inside and sore to touch. By morning it is better.
Anyway.....I was told in the beginning that I would be out of work from 4 to 8 weeks depending on what they needed to do inside. Also, it depends on how you are feeling...people heal/recover at their own speed.

Best of Luck

Your doctor said it was like a c section? WOW. Not the same surgery at ALL.

I am 3 1/2 months post op. Took about two and a half months to feel really good.

They do a lot with a TAH BSO, very different from a c section. Lots of stiches and lots healing to do. I am glad I had it done, but you do have to take time to heal.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

I am 11 weeks out today. I had to move my go back to work date back twice, ultimately needing 6 weeks off (and could really have used a couple more). That said, my job is a houseparent at a children's shelter, 4 kids age 2 to 10, two babies, lots of cleaning, lifting, and I am on shift 24/7 for 6 days/off 3.

I just started lifting the babies at 9 weeks and had to go back to narcotic pain meds for a week... this surgery is serious business. I am feeling much better this week but still need extra TLC.

If I knew pre-surgery what I know now, I would have scheduled 8 weeks off and if I felt good enough to go back to work I still would have stayed home (and enjoyed it!)

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

I agree with the other ladies. Everyone is different! My dr initially said to plan on being off work at least 3 weeks and if I had a desk job maybe I could go back part time after 3 weeks. I am a flower shop owner so I am on my feet a lot! I was out 2 weeks and back in the shop after that but only because we were extremely busy! I did try to work only 1/2 time and did take a nap when I could. My dr said to listen to my body and I would know when I could do certain things. I didn't have any major complications just numerous minor ones.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

I was told that I would need 6-8 weeks off and am planning on taking the maximum amount of time and then starting back part time.

Although I work at a computer for most of the day and it isn't strenuous it is still high pressured and I want to make sure that I give myself the best chance of healing properly first time both inside and out.

I would say to prepare work or the worst case scenario but hope that you can be back before then.

What is the recovery time for a TAH?

Wow, I would get a second opinion. For you doctor to compare this surgery with a c-section, unbelievable! That would be way to vague for me to put faith in a doctor that will change your life forever. I had a laperodomy many years ago and it still took longer to recover than a c-section. A TAH/BSO is much more complex.

I had TAH/BSO a little over a week ago. I am an unusual case, as I have been recovering very rapidly. However, I plan to take the recommended 6-8 week recovery period and I have a desk job. Stress plays a part in your healing as well.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you go for that second opinion.
