Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

Okay I know this is a really dumb question but, how soon after surgery can one take a shower?
I will be having a TAH and a hernia repair (at the same time) and I started wondering how long will it be before I can take a shower. I have terrible vision of people running from me and flies gathering around me after a time but I tend to over think things.
Any info would be great

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

I had my surgery on Wed and took a shower at the hospital on Friday before I went home. I could have taken one Thursday but just was not up to it.

My only instructions were to keep the water aimed more at my back so as not to directly hit the incision. I could use soap and have it wash down my stomach to the incision and do the same with rinsing, just a light flow to gently rinse the soap off.

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

P.s It is not a dumb question. It's difficult to be put in a situation where so much is out of our control. It feels good to know as many of the little details as possible.

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

I had a tah/bso and was gotten up and sent to the showers the day after my surgery. My dr allowed either showers or baths with instructions that I was to use soaps with no added fragrances ( like Ivory ) and nothing extra in the bath water. He said to be very careful to get the incision very dry afterwards.
I think that you should check with your dr about it & follow his/her instructions. They seem to vary from dr to dr.

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

I too showered the next day. But, my doc said to be careful not to get soap in my incisions. I think it depends on how you feel and how much stamina you have.

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

I'm scheduled for a LAVH (or TAH depending) for Dec. 5th...I'm thinking not only when can I shower but when will I be able to shave my legs; get a pedicure/manicure redone; etc...I'm sure that I won't care during post-op but I hate the idea of being a smelly, hairy, ungroomed beast-ess...

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

No questions are dumb.....HEY....we need to know.

I was able to shower when they took all the tubes out of me which was 2 days after surgery. I was told to let the water run on my incision NOT to rub or scrub the area. Pat it dry with a clean soft towel...NO RUBBING.
Regarding shaving my legs......didn't care one bit about it....I shaved probably about a week to a week and a half after the surgery. After surgery.....how you feel will determine what you do.

Best of Luck.

Too shower or not to shower....this is the question

I couldn't shower until two days after surgery, because of a drain from another surgery that I'd had done at the same time. But the wonderful nurses would bring in packages of cleaning clothes. The wipes reminded me of "wet wipes" or something, except that they were large, thick and smelled wonderful. They kept the packages of wipes in a heated compartment, and would always bring in a new package of wipes, so that whether I was using them or if they were using them on me for some reason, they were warm and felt really refreshing.

They also had a bottle of deodorant and a bottle of powder on the tray (even though I'd brought my own), and I could use that the first day after I "washed up", without getting out of bed. I never felt like I was stinky.

Although, I *did* see a fly one day....
