should I get a BSO/TAH because my sis had OVCA?

My GYN says I should get a total hysterectomy because my sister had ovarian cancer. A second opinion said that because my sister tested negative to the BRC gene, I would also likely test negative and my risk for OVCA increases only slightly... so I don't have to have my ovaries removed. I have a huge fibroid causing pain...I'm trying to pick which type of surgery is best. Any thoughts?

This is a very personal thing. 2 of my 3 sisters have met with my gyn/onc and he recommended that since they are done having children they consider removing their ovaries. I also had the BRCA testing done and it came back negative so a hereditery gene is not likley but the negetive only means I was negative for the genes tested. It is never 100% negative. It will be 4 years next month since I was diagnosed and none of my sisters have had any preventative surgery. This is a difficult decision to make even for someone like my friend who lost her mom and maternal aunt to Breast Cancer and also has a sister who has Breast Cancer. After her mom tested positive fro the BRCA gene my friend was tested and she was positive. She currently needs to decide if she will have her breasts and ovaries removed.
Again this is a very hard decision for you to make and I hope you make the one best for you.

That is a hard decision to make. Though, if one of your goals is to reduce the chances of ovarian cancer, then I would think you would want to have your ovaries removed. The question would be whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Another option would be to keep the ovaries, then, when you are through menopause, have them removed.

I've been thinking of all of these risks, and such. My sister was also stage1C with clear cell and is a 5 year survivor. Thank God! I have a GYN/ONC I will be seeing for a second opinion (actually a third). Thanks for your feedback.

My gyn said I should take tamoxifin even though my sister's BRCA had negative receptors. My other sister's gyn told her that because of the negative receptors, she did not have to take tamoxifin. It sounds as if your gyn is very conservative. I think you are smart to go for the third opinion.

If you were to have your ovaries removed now, could you do HRT? It sounds as if you have not gone through menopause yet. I had to stop HRT when my sister was diagnosed with BRCA and although I had symptoms for 7 more years, it was doable without HRT.
