Cross-country moving advice? Please help! :-)

Hi, sisters!

It's been a while since I posted here, and am glad to say I'm doing well. Hope you all are, too! I will never forget the incredible support, understanding and great advice I was fortunate to receive from you, both before and after my hysterectomy, a few years ago. I have a feeling that my current question is one that many of you have faced, and I know from experience that you will be candid! It's not even remotely related to surgery... :-)

I'm getting ready to move across-country (U.S. lower 48) and need any and all advice you can offer on how to do it with a minimum of craziness for DH, two large dogs and myself.

We used a local storage company that is affiliated with a major national mover to get the clutter out of our house before putting it on the market. They trashed our belongings, and now I certainly don't want to hire THAT company to move us. Any recommendations for good national companies that do cross-country moves? I checked with Angie's List, and they don't seem to have much in that category, except for local outfits.

Also, we're thinking of renting a mini-van to drive our dogs, since they would probably be very traumatized by flying in a commercial plane. Anyone have any experience with that (driving several days and/or flying with big dogs)? Time is getting short...

I'm most grateful for any help you can give! Wishing you all a great Thanksgiving, a little early.

Hugs,

Amoreena

Cross-country moving advice? Please help! :-)

Amoreena,

Hello...well, moved back and fourth from Florida to Washington twice. I have two smaller dogs so it wasn't as much of a problem. The soulution to my answer was just drive. One of my dogs was pretty scared to ride in the car though. I would recommend if that might be a problem or if they get car sick to definatly get something from the vet to help. It will make your life much easier during an already stressful time.

Hope your move goes smoothly- better than it has so far! lol

Hi Amoreena

We got bids from two different moving companies. We had a very tight window for the moving dates, so that factored strongly in our final choice. The charge is by weight & by the mile, so we got rid of a lot of stuff before moving day... figured we could buy replacements when we arrived in our new place. Our trip was 17 hours driving distance, so we were able to squeeze it all into one (very long) day with the dog riding "shotgun" in my hubby's truck.

Do an internet search to get tips & info on moving long distance. Good luck to you!!
