When will surgical menopause start?

I just had my surgery on Monday (TAH, BOS). So far, haven't had any hormone issues. Does it take awhile for them to begin?

When will surgical menopause start?

Hi

It is different for everyone. Some experience hot flashes right away, while others have reported not experiencing any symptoms for a year, while there are even a few who seem to never have a symptom.

It probably depends on several things, such as how old you are, and if you were already menopausal before your surgery. It seems like the younger women struggle more, and sooner. It can also depend on how much estrogen your body has stored in fat and other body tissues. It took me about 7 months before my body stores of estrogen were depleted.

Technically though, surgical menopause began as soon as your ovaries were removed, as this was the moment when your body ceased making more estrogen.

I hope this helps.

When will surgical menopause start?

Kay
Thanks for your post. I had always heard it would take about 3 months for menopausal symptoms to appear. I am 3 1/2 months post TAH/BSO and have not had any real symptoms yet. I keep waiting. I guess I should just enjoy being symptom-free while I can!

When will surgical menopause start?

Hi there...I had my poor last ovary removed on 12/4 and began having night sweats right away. They aren't so awful that I can't stand it, but they are there. I'm on Vivelle Dot .05 right now so we will see how that works. Good luck!

When will surgical menopause start?

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm 49 and had started to have some of the menopausal symptoms already, but I think I assumed I would notice a difference right away. I also have a few fat cells where estrogen could be stored. I think I'm going to take Natural Sister's advice and enjoy being symptom-free as long as it lasts!

When will surgical menopause start?

I had a TAH BSO in July and had very minor hot flashes but nothing requiring HRT. Think it really depends on the person but Dr had told me it could start anytime after surgery and wanted me to take HRT immediately. Since many meds make me sick (everything did post op) I took no meds after 2 days home. Do your homework and talk with you dr what is best for you. The only right thing is what you decide.

When will surgical menopause start?

Hey there lea811,

Believe me, I have a lot of fat cells too but I'm still having night sweats. My body must not store estrogen very well, even with the fat! You would think it would be good for something! But yes, enjoy the symptom-free days...maybe they will last a long time!

Be Happy if you have no symptoms!!!! I was having hot flashes with 12 hours of surgery and night sweats the 2nd night and the suck!!!! So be happy and enjoy a natural thermostat that isn't adjusting every 20 minutes!!! Good Luck!

When will surgical menopause start?

I never realized how lucky I am (so far). I had breast cancer 9 years ago and cannot take HRT, so I have tried to eat well. Maybe it's working. I do have some insomnia - but I had that before surgery. Good luck girls!
