20yrs post op & off HRT now Horrible hot flashes

I had a TAH 20 years ago and my doctor started me on HRT while I was in the hospital. I was actually one of the guinea pigs for the Estraderm patch. They were having a problem with the glues (caused rashes)

Anyhow, I am now 58 and about a year ago I asked my doctor about getting off the HRT so he started weaning me down from the 0.5 patch (vivelle) to the 0.37 then 0.25 then off.

That "off" was 3 months ago and I feel awful. I am constantly in and out of Hot flashes which not only leave me wet and cold but exhausted. I feel as though I am having a UTI or yeast infection but all the tests come back negative.

My doctor suggested black cohosh, which I am taking, but it hasn't helped and honestly, I want the patch back.... but I don't. I'm so tired that just typing this message feels like a big deal.

I am so embarrassed in church when everyone is wearing the heavy coats and I dress in layers so I can peel off my clothes! And then of course put them back on as I freeze from my wet shirt.

I need some help. My doctor tells me that I'll live through it and chuckles

If anyone has any ideas, thoughts, remedies, Please let me know. You'll have to excuse me now, I'm flashing.
Thanks for your time.

misery....

I just started this 'off' business. Wake up at 3am just to sweat. If you are in this for 3 months and nothing has helped -- well, I dont know if I can last that long. I still have my pills in my drawer. I dont want to quit on quitting yet, but I really hate this. I'm not sure my DH can take it either. Everything lands on him...

Have you considered adding natural progesterone? If you can read any of Dr. Lee's books, he gives great advice on using natural progesterone cream to ease symptoms of menopause, even if not using estrogen. Might be worth a read. Good luck!

You might also need some vaginal estrogen to ease your symptoms down there. I use Estrace cream but many women here recommend Vagifem or Estring.

You can buy the progesterone cream online, without a prescription. Some health food stores carry it but you need to carefully check the ingredients. Dr. Lee's website sells it at: http://www.johnleemd.com.

The vaginal estrogen stuff you do need a prescription for.

May I ask why you felt the need to stop taking hormone replacement? I know there are women who don't take replacement and never have symptoms. Then there are those who may always have symptoms and need to always take a little something.

My mom had a hyster in her early 30's. She is now 79 and has just switched from all these years of Premarin to estradiol, because it was less expensive. She is having a few mild hot flashes but feels it will level out on the new med. I also have a younger sister who had a hyster in her late 20's and has been on Premarin since. She is 51. Then I have a friend who is 65 and had a hyster at age 25. She has never taken anything and has no symptoms. Go figure!

I know that I have strong symptoms when I don't have a small amount of estrogen replacement. And I would hate to think I couldn't take it. I know that sometimes there are medical reasons to stop using estrogen.

My doc says that I should get off. I don't have any reason other than the fear of breast cancer. After doing research on the latest study, I am going to go back to the pill. I am so miserable! Hot flash I can handle, but waking up at 3am to have night sweats just is not worth it. I am taking .625 - I cut in half which I restarted on the 31st. So far, Im still having the flashes/sweats, but I am hoping I'll get back to normal in a few days. I actually slept until 4am last night! The only real risk I see is stroke. I have been trying to get healthier with weight and exercise (except I recently tore my meniscus) so maybe I can lose another 10 lbs and counter that stroke risk. I dont know. The reason I docs took my parts is 'quality of life'. I'm not done having quality yet.
