Belly button infection or something else?

My laparoscopy was 3 weeks ago. Yesterday, I noticed that one corner of my belly button incision was a little red. It hurt when I moved and felt a little tender. Last night I pushed on it and a little bit of whitish discharge came out. This morning there is some purplish-redness to the skin below the belly button, kind of like a bruising or shadowing. It still hurts in that one area and if I push on it, a tiny bit of white stuff with tinges of blood comes out, but that's only if I push on it, it isn't oozing out or flowing freely. I don't have a fever, which is why I hesitate to call the doctor's office. I'm not sure if it is just some superficial thing that maybe some Neosporin would fix. Should I try that today and then call the doctor tomorrow if it gets worse?

Hi CAmich!

I was told not to put anything like that on my incisions. Sounds like you need to make that call!

Call, it is better to call and it not be anything serious, than to let it go and the doctor ask "why did you call?"

Mitch-I hope that the doctor was able to fit you in today to take a quick look at your belly button. hopefully its something that they are able to fix with a quick round of antibiotics.

Belly button infection or something else?

Nope! My doctor is gone all week, wouldn't you know it. The soonest they could get me in to see his partner is Thursday. I guess if it gets better before then I will cancel and if it gets worse I'll have to go to the ER or urgent care. Today it doesn't feel as sore or red, it's just weeping. Maybe that means it's resolving.

Mitch-I'm so sorry that they weren't able to fit you in. If it gets any worse I would go to the ER. You don't want to risk an infection starting that could cause trouble with healing. Good luck sweety, I hope that you get to feeling better soon.

It figures the one time I actually need the man to be there, he's off on vacation. Oh well. I will let you know how it goes unless I back out. I don't really like his partner, so I'm hoping things change for the better. No fever so far, just feel like I have a mild flu with headache, a bit of nausea, and worn out (of course, that might have something to do with jumping back into the school routine and not getting as much sleep). I'll go to the ER if things get worse. Thanks for all the advice and kind words.
