Questions you wish you had asked at your pre-op

I have my pre-op appointment on Monday Jan 12th. I have printed the pre-op questions from this site, but was wondering if their were any others that others wished they had asked.

I have severe dysplasia on my cervix and will be having a TAH soon. The hospital will schedule my surgery after my pre-op.

I have never had any female problems; not even cramps during that time of the month. So I am also concerned with after surgery effects and pain management. I am a wimp and have a very low tolerance for pain and discomfort.

I had a biopsy the first of December and the cramping is still occuring. Bad enough that I have been taking hydrocodone a few times a week, after work. I have students that depend on me daily, so pain medication is out of the questions when I return to work after the surgery.

Questions you wish you had asked at your pre-op

I found that the list of questions here covered just about everything. I also had some cervical/vaginal dysplasia and had some questions specific to that.

What I didn't ask and wish I had was about pain management immediately following my surgery. I was given morphine, which helped the pain but made me very vomit-y. I wish I'd known what else to ask for. This might have been a better question for the hospital staff I talked to pre-surgery than for the doctor.

I am two weeks post-op, and I haven't taken anything stronger than ibuprofen for a couple days now. Everyone's pain is different, but as long as you're taking the complete time off work you need to and not overdoing it, most of us find that it's more a matter of discomfort than of pain--even for women with the abdominal surgery.

Questions you wish you had asked at your pre-op

I have pre ops Monday with the surgeon and I will be asking him what I still need to buy and what the hospital sends me home with. I asked him about a donut and he said the hospital would send me home with one if I thought I needed one, heck yeah I need one.
I will also be asking him if I really need any work done on my rectum, I'm still trying to get out of that one, then I won't need a donut lol.
I see the anesthegiologist on Tue. and will be asking him about something other than morphene, about adding anti infamatories to my IV as well as the possibility of adding vitamin C.
I am trying to write things down as they occur to me so hopefully every question will be addressed.
Good luck and speedy recovery to all the sisters this next week, Kris

Questions you wish you had asked at your pre-op

In reading your posting, I could not tell if you had past abdominal/pelvic surgeries or not. If you haven't, please ask why this must be a TAH instead of a Lap hyster or vag hyster. I was told I needed a TAH cause they thought I was full of scar tissue. Two drs. told me this. I had had one prior C-sect, and several cone biopsies for severe cervical dysplasia/early cervical cancer. A third dr. I spoke to over the phone from out of the area and therefore not an option for me, said that was bs, and that I wasn't necessarily a TAH-only candidate. I have had no vaginal births, but they can still do a Lap or DaVinci hyster or even a vaginal one if you are not to narrow. When they opened me up, I had NO adhesions whatsoever. he couldn't believe it.. not even any scar tissue from the c-section. Normal anatomy, he said.

I say this because I had a TAH on monday and am having a rough time. I had compared this in my mind with my c-section, which there is no comparison. I wish I would've pushed for a less invasive approach, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Also, please have an understanding with your dr. regarding pain management after surgery and during your stay. I was left in pain when Dilauded, which is usually a great drug, did nothing for me but make me stoned. I really suffered, and it was unecessary.

I hope I am not alarming or scaring you. Lots of women who post here after TAH do great, I wish I was one of them. Just giving you some info based on my experience...

Thanks for all your advice and input.

I appreciate everyone who has responded. You have given me a better understanding of the shear magnitude of the things that I need to discuss with my doctor. I hope that you all have a good recovery, as I begin mine soon.
