Type of surgery changed

I am scheduled to have a TVH on Feb 10/09, but my doctor said he would have to see if it could be done vaginally, as my last delivery left me with 3rd degree tears and he's not sure what things are going to look like in there until he gets there. Is it common to go in expecing a TVH, and then getting a TAH instead? I am not too worried, it needs to be done either way, but I'm curous to see if I will wake up with an abdominal incision instead??? Anyone have this happen?

i dont think its too common. your dr has to tell you that it can be converted to abdominal. i was told the same thing and had to sign papers that i understood that. thankfully i was able to have the lsh. i wish you the best of luck with your surgery and recovery!

It seems like there are a number of people who have to switch to a TAH because of the size of tumors, cysts, etc. A TAH can give better access under certain circumstances. Good luck with your surgery. You will soon be on the road to recovery. Keep us posted on your progress.

I am going to miss the curtsey. It was one of my favorite things about this website! Oh well, change is good.

I think that many drs have you agree and sign a paper ahead of time for "in case". That way they don't have to stop and look for approval if there's a reason to change what needs to be done.

I went into surgery having signed the consent for LAVH, knowing it could turn into a TAH. What actually happened was that my doctor performed a TLH, which I didn't even realize until I was home from the castle!

Best wishes.

surgery changed on the table

While you are being told the procedure type is being changed pre-op, I am more worried about the on the table phenomenon. My dr has scheduled an LSH for 02-13 (yes, a Friday)and has warned me of the possibility of this becoming an abdominal surgery. Has anyone else been told this before?

I've had several laparoscopic surgeries and each time have had to sign papers in case it must be converted to open (laparotomy) procedures.

Its a standard risk clause and they need to let us know beforehand, simply because Dr's can't know 100% until they open us up and have a look, however though we are told of the possibility, the fact is Dr's will do everything they can to avoid having to convert the surgery, and it doesn't happen very often.
