Is it True==U still get PAP-Smears--EVEN if your cervix has been removed??

Hi girls............

Had a TAH on Dec 8th AND he said to me in my 1st post-op check..............
Well, no more pap-smears==Merry Xmas

BUT I caught up wih an aquaintence last week who had a hyster 14mths ago AND she said YES U do still get them (She called them a "vault" smear--like Cuff in America) and shes has hers every 6 months now.

So NOW I'm confused and MOST certainly would have known for sure My Gyno Surgeon would inform me if this was to take place!

My doctor told me I still have to come once a year for one. They will test the walls of the vagina and make for sure there is nothing wrong.

I think it depends if you have a history of dysplasia or not. I had cervical dysplasia. Almost all women with cervical dysplasia have HPV (human papilloma virus). This virus can sometimes cause dysplasia in the vaginal walls as well as the cervix. So most drs. recommend that a woman without a cervix, but with a history of cervical dysplasia continue getting paps of the vagina once a year. In America, where everyone is lawsuit happy, I am sure more drs. recommend the paps for women that DON'T have a history of dysplasia to avoid possible malpractice claims down the line.

I was told to keep the once a year appointment. They will check the cells of the vaginal cuff & vaginal walls. You still want to take care of that!

Due to abnormal paps, my doctor said we would continue with them.

I will continue to have them as well, since my dysplasia was on the vaginal wall right next to the cervix. Check with your own doctor. And if you've ever had an abnormal pap, you might want to request them even if the doctor doesn't give a recommendation.

Yes, it must be case by case. My Dr. said she wants to see me yearly due to HRT but that she will probably only do a vaginal smear every five years.

Whether or not a woman has a pap smear or vaginal vault smear after a complete hysterectomy depends on the doctor, patient, and situation. Some doctors do not feel that women need the smear if they have no cervix. Some think all women should have one regardless as cells can start in the vagina for various issues. Malpractice lawsuits do not dictate whether or not a doctor suggests a woman have a pap.

In my case, I have two GYNs: my local GYN who did my hysterectomy and my endometriosis specialist who is a few hours away. They do not follow the same protocol for me regarding the pap/vaginal vault smear--one says yes, one says it is not necessary.

I had a pap every year for about five years. When those were all clear we switched to every third year.

Each of us has to talk to our own doctors about what is best for us. If your doctor does not feel a pap/vaginal vault smear is necessary for you and you would prefer to have one just to be safe, ask if your GYN will go ahead and do the test. You can state your reasons why you would prefer to have it done. If your GYN will not do the test, check with your GP.
