ovarian cysts

Okay, I had a total in 2004. My doctor said he was leaving my ovaries "because you still need them." Unfortunately, he has since moved to the other side of the country.

A bit over a year ago, I was taken out of work in an ambulance with severe abdominal pain. The cause was a ruptured ovarian cyst. The hospital called an OB-GYN, and he said, "Don't do surgery!" Unfortunately, he also has moved on.

Last week, I had the same severe abdominal pain. This OB-GYN wants to remove both ovaries, though only the left one seems to be afflicted with this problem.

Every article I've read (Mayo, WebMD, various other sources) seems to concur with the first two doctors that a bilateral oopherectomy is a Bad Idea before the age of 50. I'm 41.

Has anyone out there had experience with this?

ovarian cysts

All my adult life I had ovarian cysts most months and sometimes passed out from the pain. But it passes as you know, and it doesn't make one ill or diseased. At 47 I had TAH/BSO for cervical cancer, plus several 5cm ovarian cysts hard with vascular activity plus elevated CA125. I had ultrasounds for a bit more than 6 months keeping an eye on those, but once I had the definite cervical cancer on top of non stop flooding it was a no brainer. Surgical menopause is tough, you are probably ten or more years away from it and I would not have my ovaries removed because of cyclical cysts only. As you yourself discovered different Doctors have different methods of managing issues. To me, cyclical cysts are no big deal and you can easily plan around them. If you are concerned at all, perhaps you need to have regular internal ultrasounds for a few months or so. Surgery will fix the cyclical cysts certainly but will also change your whole life. I don't think someone who has seen you once can rightfully make a surgery call without good cause, and that you are very sensible questioning that prognosis.

Thank you!
Your answer is very helpful and exactly the sort of information I joined this forum for. I felt it very important to be able to discuss it with someone who'd been through it, or had to make this decision.

I hope everything is good now, and that you're healthy?
