Best type of Doctor to use after hysterectomy

Hi - I'm 3+ weeks post-op LAVH (took ovaries and cervix)

I'm wondering how do you go about finding a new doctor after a total hysterectomy. I'm considering going to an endocronologist. I want to go to a doctor who will discuss all hormone functions in my body. I want a doctor who at least will discuss bio-identicals. I've asked friends and neighbors and no one has a doctor like that. How do I find one. Just go down the list in the yellow pages? Do I just ask the nurse on the phone will the doctor discuss new options with me? Anyone out there been through this and succeeded?

It's not that I don't like my doctors, they are very nice but they don't want to get into the discussions of full hormone balance.

Last week when I spoke with my gyno, I asked if I should get blood tests done now before starting hrt? She said, no, because I was in surgical menopause and that the symptoms that I was experiencing were from that. She just put me on .03 mg of Premarin. I'm fine right now, it's only day 4 on it. Still have the hot flashes and the night sweats, but I know it takes time for this to work. The flashes are getting less and less during the day, but is it because of the HRT or because of the vitamin supplements? Who knows? But I'm grateful.

You may be wondering why I want to change? Well I'm not sure if I should stay with the Gynocologist (try a new one) or go to an endocronologist, or some other type of doctor. Should I contact a holistic doctor?

It's just that I want to be a participant in my health. I've read posts where the tweaking happens weeks even months later, and I want a doctor open to discussion. I've 7 other sisters in my family all with varying degrees of hormonal problems and we all live in the same vicinity. It would be a big plus if we could find the right doctor to deal with us.

Just thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone had figured out the best way to find a new good doctor.

Thanks!

Best type of Doctor to use after hysterectomy

Hi Fran,
I decided I wanted to look into the bio-identical HRT so I looked on the internet for someone that specialized in that. I went with someone that is holistic. I just went to google and looked for natural solutions for women and went from there.
I went this route because everyone I spoke with had not a clue what I was going through. My original Dr was an OB/GYN and did my surgery. I don't think she's a horrible Dr just unable to help me any further.
Good Luck,

There really isn't one type of DR which is best for helping with HRT and menopause issues after this surgery. The best doctor for you is the one you feel is genuinely interested in helping you and who is open to and informed about all the available HRT options.

My suggestion would be to contact your local compounding pharmacy and ask them which DRs in your area prescribe HRTs through them. That doesn't mean you have to use compounded HRTs; it just finds you someone with better than average knowledge and a willingness to think "outside the box", which may be important in the event that you end up having trouble finding the right combination of HRTs.

If you don't know where there is a compounding pharmacy near you, you can go to www.iacprx.org and use their online locator to find one (or several!). You need to register on the site to use the locator, but it's free to register.

I hope this helps!

-Linda
