Did you have to pre pay your doctor before surgery?

I was surprised my doctor's billing department called me Friday and requested my portion of payment prior to surgery. I have Insurance and a 20% co-pay, and they wanted the 20% co-pay. Just curious if others had to pre-pay as well.

No, I did not have to pre-pay and frankly, if I were asked to pre-pay, I would try to negotiate it to 10% instead of the 20% they are asking. IMHO, doctors know what insurance will pay and then they set their rates accordingly. I realize they have to wait on the insurance payments, but I am sure this is taken into account as well when they determine their rates.

Thanks everyone, seems like it is pretty normal. I know I still owe some, but I was waiting for all the insurance adjustments.

For the last 12 or so years, some of my doctors have requested a pre pay. Not all, but some. Many times I ended up receiving a refund as the surgery maxed me out on my limit. So yeah, I think it's fairly normal.

I have to pay on the day of pre op. I will be paying the Dr $450 and the hospital $1750 which is my out of pocket max and my deductible. I was quick to remind them that I had an OOP max so that I did not pay more than I had to. I think it is normal for them to ask for something up front now. The administrator at the hospital said they will work with you if you do not have it all the day of pre op.

I have had a month to plan so we are just going to get it paid the day of pre op and not have that stress lingering.

Yes, I pre-paid my Dr. That was $420. My portion of the hospital bill was $1000. The rest was picked up by insurance. Whew!
