serum estrodial high; saliva low?

I went to a great new doctor, who specializes in hormones and she recommended a saliva test for estrogen. My blood serum indicates Im low around 30-40, however, my saliva
is indicating high? All my symptoms indicate Im low, but they could also too much estrogen, which she feels Im using. Im currently on 2mg bio-estrogen (estrodial only) cream, 3 times a day, 1/4 tsp. She also mentioned that the blood is not affected by the cream, as the saliva is? anyone have this dilemma?

serum estrodial high; saliva low?

I would be interested to hear anyone else's response to this. My dr insists on saliva testing as she believes it's more accurate. Both my saliva and blood serum testing came back low for estrogen, and that reflects my symptoms. I know women on this site have said their symptoms are more accurately reflected by blood serum testing but to get my dr to agree to do this was incredibly difficult. Seems most hormone "specialists" recommend the saliva testing. I believe so many things can influence it though - for one being on antihistamines must make your saliva more concentrated because you produce less saliva.

Anyone else commenting please?

It does seem that topical estrogen should show up in the bloodwork though, as many women ONLY use transdermal method of absorption so this doesn't make sense that it shows up more in the saliva.

serum estrodial high; saliva low?

I use topical estrogen, have my testing done via bloodwork. It does show up in the results.

There is much controversy about saliva testing. I have seen many posts here where results registered high, despite the symptoms of low estrogen. When a retest was done via bloodwork, the results were more cohesive with the symptoms the person was experiencing.

Personally, I would go based on your symptoms, not what some test showed. If your symptoms indicate low estrogen, perhaps you should talk with your doctor about increasing your doseage and see if things improve.

Interesting thought. I was just thinking back to when I did the saliva test MANY years ago. As I recall there were strict instructions on when to do and what to do before you put the cotton swab in your mouth.

I think there are so many variables when you are putting something in your mouth and that can skew your results.

Personally, I will stick <no pun intended > with the bloodwork. I and my doctor feel that is more reliable.

Kim, wait... what cotton swab? I just had to spit into some tubes first thing in the morning for the testing. And I did follow directions carefully about when to test - after certain amount of time had passed from taking meds... BUT... when you take antihistamines day in and day out - it takes about a week for them to clear from your body. I know this because I recently quit Zyrtec and the withdrawals lasted about 5-6 days and once it was gone from my body, felt like I was making tons of spit again!!!!

I agree though, my blood levels show low and I feel low estrogen. The nurse claims though that they have tested both ways and overmedicated women whose blood serums were low whereas their saliva tests showed normal levels.

Everyone's different. I know. I honestly prefer the bloodwork and hope to be able to convince my dr to do that in the future. (might have to bribe her though!)

That's right! I was confusing the saliva hormone test with the adrenal testing. Like I said, it was MANY years ago that I did the saliva hormone test. With adrenals you swirl a cotton swab in your mouth 3x per day, than put the swab in a tube.

Just wondering - how many have had more accurate results with saliva vs blood testing for adrenals - cortisol levels and DHEA? And if you do serum testing for adrenals, do you do multiple cortisol tests in the day?

Guess you would need to do a thorough search to find that answer. I am just going by what I have read, I am not a statistician.

As this is Gursie's thread, I will leave it at that.
