Does surg. induced meno. last as long as natural meno.?

Just wondering. I turn 40 this month and am 5 weeks post op from a tah/bso. I have some hot flashes and am wondering if my surgically induced menopause will last as long as a natural menopause for me would have lasted?

Hi Dena,

I am glad that you posted this question. I am 32 and am in surgical menopause as well. I am 4 weeks post op so not that far away from you. I am curious to see what some of the ladies reply... Thanks for asking this question..

Some say the symptoms don't take as long to settle down because your ovaries don't kick in and out. They are just gone so it should be sooner rather than late for things to settle down. No guarantees though because your fat produces estrogen so have to deplete natuarl stores and that sort of thing.

Dena,
Surgical menopause is forever, but that doesn't mean that you'll have bad symptoms forever. While it took me awhile to find my balance, I am now almost 10 years post op. I have an occassional hot flash, but nothing like those early months post op. They are fleeting, go as quickly as they come on. I am sleeping well, no night sweats or mood swings.

Re: Does surg. induced meno. last as long as natural meno.?

Those of us who had both ovaries removed will not have to go through peri-menopuse. The syptoms of peri-menopuse are also those of menopasue. Peri-menopuase can last for up to 10 years. We lucky ladies do not have to deal with this. However, we do have to deal with the sudden onset of menopause. Some say the symptoms felt durring sudden onset menopuase are more intense.

So for us we have cut off the first part of the journey. Now we are are at the part were the ovaries are not producing estrogen and we are left with what the fat in our bodies produce (different than what the ovaries did). This part of the journey is the same as far as the research I have read says.

I have been reading Menopause for Dummies and some other research on the internet. The best thing is to do as much reading as you can.

What if I don't want to take HRT meds? Am I doomed with my mood swings and weepiness? Or is there some way to overcome it and take control without medication?

All I can say is good luck with that, before I gave in to taking medicine I cried over EVERYTHING and tried anything possible to help with the menopause, nothing helped me. I was a "regular" at the natural health store and tried everything they could recommend with no avail.
