Average Hospital Stay?

I am booked in for October surgery (laproscopic). I live about a 2 hour drive from the hospital. My doctor feels that an overnight stay will be enough.

I was curious to know how long others stayed in hospital. The drive the next day worries me. Any thoughts?

Average Hospital Stay?

Hey, Sara--
That's a long drive right after surgery! I was only in one night, and through the afternoon of the next day-- but live only 20 minutes from the hospital. Don't think I would have liked a 2 hour trip-- I felt pretty lousy. If you don't feel up to it, ask to stay another night. I don't think they will kick you out if you are not ready!
Good luck to you, let us know what happens!
Love from Les

Average Hospital Stay?

Hello, I had my surgery on a Monday afternoon. I stayed that night and Tuesday night. I left the hospital Wednesday evening. I agree that is a very long drive to and from the hospital. I was about 15 minutes away. If you need more time in the hopital ask your I'm sure he will give you the okay. Linda

Average Hospital Stay?

For your peace of mind, you might ask your doctor in advance what his criteria are for allowing you a second night stay. Remind him of your 2-hour drive. (Also ask for a shot of pain medicine about 30 minutes before you get in the car).

Good luck with your surgery!

2 nights

I had a Laprascopic Assisted vaginal hysterectomy and stayed 3 days, 2 overnights. I live only 10 minutes from the hospital and the drive home was extremely uncomfortable - too much josting and I got sick to my stomach too - isn't there another hospital closer? That seems like an awfully loooong time!

decisions! decisions!

Yes...there is another hospital closer but my options were -

(1) hospital in town / full incision surgery / doctor just got surgery privileges in the last month or so / surgery date farther out.

(2) hospital 2 hours away / fully laproscopic surgery / two doctors performing surgery. The main doctor was head of gyn & obstetrics for the hospital / surgery date closer.

I chose option #2. I guess I will just have to grin & bear the ride!

I can't argue with your decision. A pain and antinausea shot right before the ride will help a lot. Be sure to ask your doctor well in advance to write orders for it in your chart and confirm when you get to the hospital that it's in there. Have a safe ride home!

Average Hospital Stay?

I had my surgery on Tuesday afternoon and went home on Thursday afternoon. Couldn't wait.....48 hours was long enough for me.

Average Hospital Stay?

I had a TVH on a Monday morning and was back home by suppertime on Tuesday. One overnight was okay...but I sure missed my own bed. That hospital bed was uncomfortable!

You have a LOOOOONG car ride to look forward to! The twenty minute ride I had to get home seemed like 2 hours. I was so tired, but too uncomfortable in the car to doze.

Do make sure to take the pain medication shortly before you start your trip back home.

Good luck!

Marshmellow Car?

Can't speak to the length of hospital stay (TAH) but would suggest you find a friend or family with a very soft riding car. My dad took me home and has a very nice car, but I could feel every bump in the road (I finally told him I thought his tires were overinflated!). My car is an older Olds and rides like a marshmellow but would of been better for after surgery trip.
