Home from the castle and feeling great!

So, I'm very excited to be the first post from the week's princesses. Here's how my trip to the castle went. We were late getting there because the drive took a lot longer than anticipated-arrived @ 1040. No problem, the hosp had had an emergency C-section so they were behind too. Was brought right to my room and they tucked in bed to wait. Went to holding room about 1:30 and OR @ 2:00. Got to choose between full anesthesia and spinal with light anesthesia. Chose spinal- SO GLAD I DID! Woke up right after surgery, wide awake and feeling great. Had some cramping as spinal wore off, about a 3 on 1-10 scale. Morphine pump kept the pain at bay. Next morning I was hungry but couldn't really eat eat much until 10:30. Mostly liquids so that I didn't get nauseated. After thay unhooked my morphine, cath, and BP sleeve, I got to walking- first holding onto my dh, then by myself. I made trips to the nurses' station every time to get water, so I could pee for them. Because I also got a TVT, I had to show them I could pee and self-cath before they'd let me go. No problem, they finally released me @ 4:30.

Had an uneventful night at home, woke up crampy, but the Motrin is doing well enough controlling the pain so that I haven't even taken any Vicodin today. Walking around the house a LOT. Don't want to sit down because I feel so good standing straight. I am probably not that tired because I chose the spinal.

I can't express how happy I am that I did this. A few times I almost let my fear talk me out of it, but my life will be SO much better now without the Adeno, and incontinence I had lived with for so long!

Sorry so long! I wish all May 4-week Princesses a speedy recovery; I am thinking of you and can't wait to hear about your progress!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

Hi, I had a TVH with a bladder sling and A/P repair on 5/4/09 I was discharged on 5/6/09 with a catheter home. I was unable to urinate on my own. It was the most umpleasant experience, I felt as if my bladder would burst. My 1st night post op was very painful as the Morphine did not work for me at all. I was then prescribed Fentanyl, which also did not control the pain very well. After a while I was given a combination of Toradol and Percocet which made things much better. I have some pain in my lower back and around my right kidney area and was wondering if this is normal. I seem to always fall into the catagory of the 1% of people who have complications. I must see my surgeon on Monday so that they can remove my Foley catheter. I hope all is well and that I am able to void. Will keep you posted.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

Had a da Vinci robotic hysterectomy yesterday morning at 7am. I had my cervix, uterus, tubes and ovaries taken out. The worst for me was waking up in recovery but once I was in my room and resting I felt so much better. I didnt sleep at the castle due to so many interruptions from nurses, etc. so I was anxious to get home and rest. I woke up feeling so good. I walked the halls and once my doctor checked me over this morning I was released. I am taking Aleve and feeling really good. A body pillow and heating pad are all I need. I feel great. Thanks to everybody for all of their tips. Chapstick was best tip for castle.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

Hi, I had my hysterectomy(vaginal) on May 4th along with a full tummy tuck and liposculpture. I stayed the night in the hospital on Monday. I had a shot of morphine in my spine that lasted for 24 hours. The pain wasn't all that bad, the catheter was the worst of it. When I came home on Tuesday, I was ok. Uncomfortable, but not terrible. Tuesday night wasn't that great. I am doing ok. not sure if it's mostly the Tummy tuck pain I feel. I am taking vicoden every 4 hours per my doctors orders. so far so good. not as bad as i anticipated.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

had a tvh, tvt and a/p repair on 5/6, discharge home yesterday 5/7. surgery went great, woke up with pca, which was great, everytime i woke up, just pressed that little button and fell right back to sleep again.
worst part of post op pain was soreness in my groin and thighs from the position they kept my legs in during th 3 hour surgery.
this morning i'm very uncomfortable, but it's not really pain. doctor said she would call me later on today - so i'll see how the day progresses.

best thing that happened though was using a scopalamine patch the night before surgery to prevent post op nausea and vomiting, it worked great, never had anethesia before where i didnt get vomiting post op, so this was a very pleasant surprise, i' will post that on the pre-op board later on, right now i just want to go back to bed!

hope everyone is doing well. i'll touch base back later on in the day or weekend.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

I had a LSH on Monday May 4th in the morning. I thought it was going to be as truamatizing as a c-section. I was mildly suprised to find that the most uncomfortable pain I had was in the recovery as I was coming out of the general anesthetic. I was then moved to my room, and as I was being wheeled out of the recovery area, my mom and dad were waiting for me and the first thing that came out of my mom's mouth was, "Wow, you don't have a belly anymore!" It turned out that my uterus was 3 times its normal size because of the fibroids. My hopsital stay was pretty uneventful. I had trouble keeping water down for about 5 hours in the late afternoon but I eventually got through it and was discharged the next morning. It feels so nice not to soak through my pads and clothing anymore and not having to wear anything longer or thicker than a panty liner.

I was feeling pretty good yesterday and I did a big no, no. I did laundry (since I was unsupervised yesterday). I ended up with a sore belly and a fever. So today it's just mostly bedrest for me to recover from yesterday. I also had my first good cry too over the fact that I no longer am able to get pregnant, I hear it's all part of the grief process some of us ladies go through. But I know all will be well and the benefits of a hysterectomy vs. having babies for me was my better option. But it does make me a little sad though, but at least was able to have two beautiful children before this, so it's ok I guess.

P.S. Cheesy is right, chapstick is a life saver during a hospital stay.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 04-May 10,2009

I had my laproscopic procedure to remove the uterus and cervix on the 6th. Recovery has been good- the pain is definitely manageable. This is the first time in a long time that I don't have any bleeding or spotting! It's amazing to me.

Because I am doing so well, I have to remind myself not to over do it. I over did it after the birth of each of my kids and it always set me back. Hopefully I will learn from that and from some of the stories I've read on here.
