Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

Just wondering if anyone out there is in the same boat I am in? I am Bipolar (have been for 8 years now) Although I am on a great medication regimine and feel great and very stable I worry about removing my ovaries in fear of what this will do to my bipolar cycles. If anything!?

I have this on my lsit of questions to ask my Dr on Thursday but I just thought I would bring it up here and see wht you all had to say about it. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Wishing you all the best!!!

Re: Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

I too am concerned with the same... which is why I have never opted for hormone / birth control etc.. to help with the heavy flow...
The only difference is that I am planning to keep my ovaries for that reason. I had cysts on my ovaries too ... but they were able to go in laparascopy and lance and drain it.. this was many (15 years ago)
I am interested in what your Dr. says please post.. if you have the time

Re: Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

I too am bipolar and im having surgery May 12th. My husband and I are very concerned about how the surgery will affect my moods. We are leaving in my overies in hope they will prevent early menapause. But there is a 50% chance they will fail. But between my GYN and my Psyc doc we feel confident I will eventually find the right meds for me. Are you on meds now for your Bi-polar. Im on Lithium and Elivil. Good luck with you surgery.

Re: Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

Hi Crystal,

I am on Topamax, Abilify & Prozac. My Psych has no idea about any of this yet. This is all new since my last appt with him. I don't see him again until June. Do you think I should call him and talk to him before I have my surgery? I go Thursday to HOPEFULLY get a surgery date and I think that it could be within the next 2 or 3 weeks possibly????????

Best of luck to you with you surgery too!!

Re: Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

I think its very important for you to keep both of your doctors informed of whats going on. They both need to know what drugs you are on as well. Most pain meds have a mind altering affect and they might change how your meds work. Please let me know how everything goes.

Re: Bipolar and considering removing ovaries?

I have already made out my med list for my new GYN that I will be seeing on Thursday. But after my appt I will be sure and give my Psych a call on Friday and fill him in on what's going on. He may want to see me sooner than June. He is really good with me!!!

Thanks so much for your input!!!!!!
