Four weeks post-op - can I go out for light shopping?

Hi all I had a totaly hysterectomy on April 13, it will be 4 weeks on Monday... tomorrow is Saturday and I haven't been out of the house, the closest thing is a walk to the mailbox.

Would I be over doing it if I went for a drive to the Drug Store with Mom, it's 4 minutes from my house and she will be driving.

For those of you 4 weeks post op how long before you went out i.e. light shopping?

Thank you!

Patti

Re: Can I go out?

I think you could go out with your Mom. If you start to feel tired find a place to sit or wait for Mom in the car.

You can do a little more each day but remember to stop when you feel tired. You can take a walk around the house or up the street but remember, you have to walk back so don't go too far at first.

If you do any shopping, let someone else carry your bags if they are heavy.

Have fun with Mom!

Re: Can I go out?

Patti,

Wow! 4 weeks and you haven't left the house!! Good job...I only lasted about 2 1/2 weeks before I was just about to go crazy. My first trip out of the house was to Target with my DH driving. It was not so good (too much too soon). I had to stop a lot to rest, and we didn't really even look at anything (just the walk from the car to the door was exhausting). I came home after that and took a 2 hour nap!!! I think you should be fine with a small excursion. Walk slow and don't push the shopping cart. Have fun being out and about!!!

Re: Can I go out?

Hi Patti.... I too had a TAH on April 15th. This past Tuesday May 5th, a friend drove me to "Trader Joe's" grocery. She assisted me in & out of the car and also pushed the cart for me. Any heavy items like a gallon of milk, she placed in the cart for me. She also retrieved any items that were low on the shelves. I enjoyed my little shopping trip and was back home in about an hour.. I hope this info helps!

Re: Can I go out?

Patti, 4 weeks should be fine to go out. I have been going to work once 3 weeks passed. I also did an abdominal total hysterectomy. Just make sure you have your mom with you, you don't overdo it and are not found in a place where you have to sit in a regular chair for too long.
Enjoy your first time out!

Re: Can I go out?

My first time out was 2.5 weeks and I barely made it into the store, I had to sit for the whole time while my husband shopped. I think I did it too soon. Just be aware your first time out is very overwhelming since you have just been in your house. Make sure you are with someone at all times, don't push the cart and have the person drop you off at the door and then sit and wait for them. If you feel tired or overwhelmed sit down or if they have one of the little electric carts to sit and drive maybe get one of them. Good luck for your first time out. Remember it will be overwhelming, it was for me, but each time gets easier and better. Have fun!

Re: Can I go out?

I had a SAH on a Tuesday and on Sunday before my stables were taken out I went to church for a cover dish dinner. Didn't stay long, just went to eat and with it being such a pretty day, I had hubby take me for a drive. I did fine...when I started getting tired, I had hubby take me home.

Re: Can I go out?

My first outing was to the Dr. for the 4 wk check-up. That was ok. Four days later, I went to the dentist (almost a 2 hour drive one-way). After the dentist I went to Target, Ross, Belks, Books-a-Million, and a few other places. I was fine. My hubby drove and I didn't even sleep in the car. I was tired, but I had been doing much walking at home in the house and around our several acres. Start slow and work your way up. My dr. told me I could drive at 2 weeks, but I haven't driven yet. I really haven't wanted to. There is a presentation at the school where I work next week on a new computer program. I will drive to that as I am the main person that will use the new program. I will only be at school for about two hours so I think I can handle that. I think I will ty to get a haircut while I am there before I go back to work the next week.
