Ablation for me?!
I am a 41 yr old mom who only takes care of her children and not herself! I have been anemic for years but I am able to take a nap here or there and deal with it. My doc now is pushing me to have the ablation done - the sheath inserted and the microwaving of my uterus!?!?! I would not say I have horrible periods. They are a week long and for about 4 days, I change a pad every 2 hours. ok - I have read some success stories but have also read some horror stories. I don't want to trade regular periods for irregular not-knowing periods/spotting. I also have 3 children so have been through child birth, but the in-office procedure does scare me. Any thoughts. Ablation to help with anemia?!? Thanks so much. Brenda

Re: Ablation for me?!
my neighbor had an ablation and has had great luck with it and doesnt bleed at all. its a great option to avoid major surgery like a hysterectomy. has the dr found a reason for your heavy bleeding?

Re: Ablation for me?!
I had endometrial ablation in 2004 because of very long, very heavy periods (The insurance company made me go through a couple of D&C's first but they didn't help at all). My gyno said that 2 out of 3 women stop having their periods altogether and that the 3rd woman would have very light periods, sometimes even spotting only. I, of course, was the 3rd woman. I had the ablation - no biggie, alittle cramping but that was it. I had light periods for about a year or so and the slowly got heavier, back to where I was before. That year was WONDERFUL though. Yes, I'd do it again!

Re: Ablation for me?!
Thank you for your responses. I am a bit of a chicken when you actually describe what they do to you!! They think I have heavier than normal periods - but that I think they are normal. Then when I am bleeding, I loose too much iron through that week and have a hard time building it back up before I get my next period. I am not sure if I buy it, so am digging around on the internet before my apptmt with my gyno. Thank you so much and love this forum.

Re: Ablation for me?!
have you had a hysteroscopy done with biopsies? if not, you might want to speak to your dr about not knowing the reason for your heavy bleeding but wanting to do an ablation. before i was given my options to stop/control my heavy bleeding, i had to have a hysteroscopy, uterine/endometrial biopsies, d&c, ultrasound, etc.
are you on iron therapy?

Re: Ablation for me?!
Thanks for the names of the tests I should talk to my doc about. I have been on iron therapy for a long time. We have 3 boys who are 17, 14 and almost 4. I have been on iron therapy since our latest was born - so almost 4 years. I have tried everything - taking 3 iron tabs - slow release, prego vitamins, etc with Vit C, with B12, with B's but it doesn't seem to move my hemoglobin. I think that is the reason I am hesitant - is this really going to raise my hemoglobin and what will I end up with as far as periods when my ablation is done. I asked my doc if we could do a hemoglobin culture right before my period and one again right after but she said that it takes the blood longer than that to go up/down.

Re: Ablation for me?!
For more information regarding ablations you might want to check out the Endometrial Ablation Discussion Group.
You might also want a second opinion about what is best for you as well as seeing a doctor who specializes in iron issues. Either your GYN or GP should be able to refer you to someone to help you understand the anemia issue and if eliminating or decreasing your periods is the necessary treatment plan.
Best wishes!
