ovarian cysts--operate or not?

I've had breast cancer, had a left mastectomy and completed 14 months of treatment in April 08. Now I have a complex cyst (either it's one that's septated or it's two very close together) on my left ovary. My most recent ultrasound three weeks ago seems to indicate part or one of the cysts is getting smaller--the radiologist's impression is dissolving complex ovarian cysts. I went to see a gyn oncologist, who did an exam and is "concerned." He said something about mural nodes... He would prefer surgery to remove the mass. I would prefer another ultrasound in three to five weeks to see where things stand. I think I'm also going to get a second opinion with a gyn onc at the regional cancer center. Does anyone know if my plan sounds reasonable--does possible ovarian cancer move so quickly I shouldn't wait a few weeks?

Re: ovarian cysts--operate or not?

Not to be an alarmist but I had my "suspicious" mass grow quickly - and, yes, it did turn out to be cancer. How large is the mass? Generally, if larger than 5cm it should probably come out. My gyn onc said he could go in laprascopically and send a section to path. If malignant the operation would turn into a full hysterectomy. If it's benign, it's an outpatient surgery with quicker healing time but then you no longer have to guess and you still have your other ovary.

Re: ovarian cysts--operate or not?

thanks learninglots. The cyst is about an inch and has stayed that size (last ultrasound indicated it might even be getting smaller) for a couple months. Your suggestion is good, it's just with all the other surgery I've had for the bc, the idea of more cutting just isn't where I'm at. Hopefully I'll like the second opinion doc better than I did the first one--just couldn't be convinced he looked at my case instead of wanting to rush to operate because that's what he does.
