TAH & BSO concerns

I am 40 years young and on Friday was advised to have a full Hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries and my uterus. I have had endometriosis and severe adhesions for over 20 years and to make it simple, our only option for a family was adoption, which we did.
I recently learned a whole new skill..... growing very large (simple) cysts on my ovaries. I have had external and internal ultrasounds, the tumor marker CA125 etc blood work, numerous internal exams (don't we love those - lol) and a CT scan.
I am concerned that I will regret losing everything and am scared of all the potentially associated "side affects" of a TAH & BSO. I have read a lot about other people's experiences and thank everyone that shares, it's not quite so lonely this way. Neither my sister, nor Mother has had to think about this, so I don't have anyone with real first hand experience....

I would like to ask if anyone can respond with their story if you had a similar prognosis, visited the Castle and came back over the moat!
Thank you so much,

Re: TAH & BSO concerns

Because you have endometriosis, I would strongly suggest an appointment with an endometriosis specialist. They are the experts when it comes to recognizing, treating, and removing endometriosis. Since neither a hysterectomy or oophorectomy will cure endo, you want the best surgeon you can find to decrease your chance of endometriosis recurrence. If you haven't had a second opinion about what is best for you, you might schedule that before scheduling your surgery.

To read about how ladies have actually done with regard to a TAH/BSO, reading through the Tell Your Hyst Story section could be helpful.

A hysterectomy is not a risk free surgery and we have all had different outcomes (I had complications and have had to have additional surgery to remove more endometriosis and adhesions). What is important is that you have weighed your pros and cons and done your research so you make the best decision for you!

Best wishes!

Re: TAH & BSO concerns

Dear Weiser,

My spouse and I are on our way to a second opinion at 9 AM tomorrow.
Sadly, this time it is my ovaries that are the major issues and my endometriosis has had to take a back seat! I have to say that I would like to be able to keep one ovary but as I said in my initial post, although the left ovary is now huge with a monster cyst attached, the right ovary, although standard size, also has a cyst (referred to as a "mass") attached.
I am anti surgery as a whole and hate medication of any kind but can appreciate the benefits and for quality of life I will do both gladly. I have read a lot of the Hyst story posts and agree, well worth the read.
Again, as you rightly say, second opinions, (in my opinion) are critical. It is my body and I will have to live with it, so making the right choice based on as much factual information as possible is imperative.
Thank you so much for being there,
