New-need DX info from others

My gyno did an endometrial biopsy and a coloscopy after my last abnormal pap which he said showed glandular cells. He called me into his office, but did not give me a whole lot of info leaving me wondering how bad my situation is. He has referred me to a gyno/oncologist and said it would be best for him to answer my questions. Well, it could be weeks before I see him. He did tell me that I would probably need a cone biopsy done and likely a TAH. The only results he cited from the biopsies was severe atypical endometrial cells.
Can anyone give me an idea of what this means? Do I have cancer, pre-cancer? he looked like it was a grim situation. He said I could come back to him for follow up treatment once I was taken care of?????? So long, see you later LOL! Anyway, I am getting copies of my records from him for another matter and hopefully will have more info, but in the meantime would appreciate anybodies experience.

Re: New-need DX info from others

You will know more when you get copies of your records... My gyne actually said , " I'm not sure what some of this means." Gyn/onc. have several years of extra training in cancers of the female organs..(uterus, tubes, cervix, etc) The gyne probably didn't want to say much as the gyn/onc may have a different approach as to what may need to be done.
Try not to worry too much. I have seen people have a cone biopsy that will take care of the situation for quite some time. My friends daughter had that done and she is still fine after 2 yrs..

Re: New-need DX info from others

When you call to make your appt with the gyn onc, in addition to telling them you were referred, it may help to tell them what your gyn told you. I was able to see the gyn onc three days after the diagnosis from my gyn.

Doctors certainly are different in their approaches. My gyn told me I might be seeing her for follow up - or her and the gyn onc - or the gyn onc alone. She said it would be up to the gyn onc to decide. I see only the gyn onc - he said he can do everything for me that's needed.

Please keep us posted on what's happening with you.

Re: New-need DX info from others

JMS, I just wanted to say I'm so sorry that you are going through this worry. I am going through a very similiar worry right now and I HATE the waiting. On the one hand I want to put this off as long as I can, on the other I want it out of me NOW. I am going to ask my gyn for some anti-anxiety pills when I see her tomorrow. I hope that will help me... and I hope you get your answers quickly! HUGS!

Re: New-need DX info from others

I hope you can get in to the gyn/onc soonest as the unknown makes the waiting even harder. If the appointment date is not imminent, you might call the gyn/onc's office explaining your situation and request to be put on the cancellation waiting list which could move the visit up.
Once you learn the DX, you and your doctor will make plans to take care of the problem and you can feel you are moving forward. I hope you have good rapport with your new doctor and you find him easy to talk to, ask questions, etc. . Pls keep us posted.

Re: New-need DX info from others

Thanks for all the quick response! My gyno actually called a gyno/oncologist while I was at the office and found they should have openings after the 21st. They said my records will be faxed over and the new Dr's office will call me to set up an app. I am hoping to get my records this week (I am waiting for the Dr to write me a letter). When I do, I will post what the test results said on here so you guys can tell me what you think. I suppose severe atypical endometrial cells could be considered a pre-cancerous or cancerous condition depending on the Dr. At any rate I do want them out!!

Re: New-need DX info from others

Today I called to ask the Dr's asst when my needed letter might be ready and that I would pick it up with my records when ready. She said she was working on it tomorrow, Tues. The girl who answered the phone said she had just gotten off the phone with my ins co as she was getting clearance for me to have a pet/ct scan. She said the Oncologist/gyno wants it done before he sees me for a consultation. I didn't know anything about this either. Is this normally a first step to determine what's going on? Thanks to all. I'm getting more nervous now!

Re: New-need DX info from others

It sounds like your doctor's office and the gyn/onc office is working well together (a blessing -- doesn't always happen!). And yes, most gyn/oncs will need at least a CT Scan -- not unusual. What is unusual is that they are putting the "ducks in a row" and getting your testing done without a lag time -- also a blessing.

Now, I know this is hard, but you can't do much else until you see this doctor. So try to keep your mind off of things -- I know, I know. But, you really can't do anything except go for the tests, know that it seems you've been referred to a very good gyn/onc that is ready to help and that your regular doctor knows that he needed to refer you.

Take care...we will be watching for your posts. We are here for you.

Re: New-need DX info from others

Hi again, Sounds like you have a top-notched gyn/onc with an efficient office staff to boot as they are lining up your test; etc. The PET/CTscan should provide further info so the doctor can make a thorough DX and thus determine the surgery and/or treatment plan best for your case.
I know it's difficult but try to keep busy doing things that may keep your mind off this at least for short spurts. Rent funny movies, go for lunch with a good friend; some ladies clean house like MIL was coming, etc. Perhaps a day spa visit including massage or a pedi/manicure would help relax you?
Pls keep us updated. I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

Re: New-need DX info from others

Thanks all. I think this Dr will be good. I am in a situation with my husband far away. I asked if they could try to schedule the test this week. My solution is to run away the rest of this month and deal with it all upon return! I purchased tickets to fly to W Africa on Sunday to return on Aug 2nd. I hope I can get the scan this week, but at any rate, I know once I get started with all of this, I won't be going anywhere. I will keep you posted. I do hope to get my records in a couple days.
