how much walking should we do post op per day?

Can you gals tell me how much walking we should be doing daily 5-6 days post op? I have been reading others are walking like 30-40 mins per day. My gosh, I could not possibly do that right now. I walk from my chair to the potty upstairs 20 times a day, lol I hope that counts. I just tire too easily and have too much tummy soreness, nausea, and head aches to walk that much. Is that ok? Or should I try to walk a lot more?

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

I am just walking bits around the house and made a couple of trips to the mailbox. I also have made a couple of trips a day down/up the stairs (my room is upstairs). I think its different for everyone. I think you should just listen to your body. If you push too far you will know but do try to get some shuffles in.

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

It is a really individual thing. If you need to go up and down stairs, that will make it tricky for you. I was able to walk just for about 5-10 mins at a time in the first week and didn't really get beyond 15 mins till the last few days. I was advised to avoid stairs if possible, so you are working extra hard if you can't avoid them. The first few times I added stairs to my walking (just to walk in the park opposite the house rather than on the deck), i was extra sore.

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

i can tell you if you do to much to soon you will pay. People who are walking 30 to 40 min. may have had a less complcated surgery than you. Listen to your bodies. what ever your doing today do a little bit more tomorrow. If you are sore from doing a little more than do less the next day. Your body will tell you what you can and can not do. Just listen to it. Lots of luck!

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

Definitely listen to your own body.

I had an LSH and for the first few days didn't walk much at all.
After that I managed a few minutes every hour (usually when I had to get up to pee).

Now, after 10 days I can manage walking around for about 10 minutes every hour, or if I accumulate it, about 30 minutes at the store.

Please take gentle care of yourself.

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

I think walking is what wears me out the most - especially on errands. I am up to 3 errands in a day without it wearing me out. I really try to be careful and pace myself.

oh thank heavens! What a relief. I was feeling like an under achiever, lol! My body just is not ready for that already. This has been more than I anticipated.

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

Everyone is different. I walked just a few steps the first week but I got tired very quickly and still do some days (7 mo. post op) although I can walk alot further now I still tire out in mid afternnoon. My surgery was long and complicated so longer recovery. I still can't lift 15 lbs without pelvic pain. I was pretty surprised also, early on that I just couldn't do much. Take your time and definitely listen to your body like others have mentioned. I tried to be a super woman and thought I should be further along than what I was. Don't push it, you'll regret it later.

Take care. You'll be fine.

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

My doc said i would walk as much as i could until my 2 week check, then she rephrased and said "strolling, NOT fitness walking." I'm 9 days post op and walking 3-4 miles per day broken up in to 3 x 20-25 minute walks - however, i ran a marathon 12 days before my TAH/LSO so i'm superfit. The gentle walking feels really good and i rest when i'm done.

Having said that, my husband drove me to Lowes today (about 15 minute drive, which was very uncomfortable) and all i did was walk from the store door to the customer service counter, wait about 30 minutes for him to bring up a work order and pay for it (i get an active duty discount so i had to pay ;-) then we went home. I was TOTALLED! I couldn't believe how exhausted i was... so the superwoman cape stays tucked away in the closet for now :-)

Re: how much walking should we do post op per day?

Hi, I am walking 30-45 minutes every the morning but I am 4 1/2 weeks not days post-op! I over did it the second week and ended up with a fever and felt horrible. My doctor told me try and walk 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day, inside the house counts. that adds up to your 30-45 minute time frame, but not at once.
