Words of wisdom...or funnies?

What words really helped you get through your cancer journey?

I'm working on a charity project and would like to enclose words of wisdom, encouragement, or just things to help the other patients smile. For the life of me I'm drawing a blank!

Who better to turn to than my sisters? So please help me along here...what words touched you or were so ironic that you couldn't help but laugh? What would have been something you WANTED to hear, but didn't? What words made you want to scream?? (those I want to avoid!)

It's not profound but I have to smile when I hear "put on your big girl panties."

Another hystersister quoted Christopher Robin: "You are smarter than you think, braver than you believe, and stronger than you know." I like that one a lot.

Good luck with your project.

Re: Words of wisdom...or funnies?

My GYN/ONC's medical secretary at my initial consult:

"We are women.....we are strong".

Best wishes with your project!

Well, maybe not scream, but I did grow weary being told "how lucky" I was that it was caught fairly early. Maybe folks could say, "I'm so glad it was caught early," or something, but try not to say "lucky." Facing the prospect of major surgery, having all your female organs removed (including part of the vag), and dealing with the ongoing specter of a recurrence does not make you feel "lucky."

I honestly can't think of any words of wisdom which helped, but a really good hug meant a lot.

You're always doing something for others, Vega!

Re: Words of wisdom...or funnies?

I've wanted to get involved with this charity for some time, but I don't have the money to buy gifts to send out. Or the time to keep involved with it. Then I thought I could just send cards...but I like to personalize things.

Now I have my weekends free. Financially it sucks, but man I've needed the extra 'down time'. It hit me a couple weeks ago that I have all kinds of extra fabric and floss laying around (I cross stitch as a hobby) and figured I could put them to good use! Not only will it keep my happy with my hobby, but it can lift someone else's spirits. And its easy enough to just fold inside of a card!

Then I drew a blank as to what would be uplifting. I've gotten a couple quotes I'm going to start with, but if you all think of anything else let me know!

Re: Words of wisdom...or funnies?

I am sorry to hear that your free weekends are affecting you financially. Your cards sound lovely. I hope you are including your name, etc. as the artist on the back of the card. I know you are doing this strictly for charity but you never know where it might lead. Having spent the last several months attending job clubs and networking like mad to find a new job, I have heard amazing stories about how opportunities find people in very unexpected ways.

I will try to think of shorter phrases - it would take forever to cross stitch Christopher Robin's quote!

Re: Words of wisdom...or funnies?

Thanks Gerry, I was thinking I could Cross stitch SMARTER, BRAVER, STRONGER and back stitch the rest. Then put a nice little cross stitched border around it. I was thinking of framing them, but that adds to shipping costs. So I'm going to fray the ends to make them a little more "finished"

Re: Words of wisdom...or funnies?

The words "Take Heart" helped me a lot. Don't know if that helps!

I do agree with monami though, about people saying how "lucky" we are that it was caught early!

Good luck with your project
