Hi. My name is Laura and I am new to this site. I am really glad I have found it. It offers so much information. I am sure that once I am not taking the pain pills as often it will be easier to make sense of everything! I am one week post op. I had a LAH (I think!) The doc removed everything except my cervix. I have three incisions on my belly; one in the belly button and one on either side of my lower belly. The one on the right is fairly large. Doc says that is due to extensive "work" that had to be done on that side. I am feeling a little discouraged as I thought by now I would be feeling so much better than I am. I was in the hospital for two days. When I came home on Saturday afternoon, I was doing pretty good. Pain was being controlled with the pain meds that were prescribed. However, Sunday night while I was up taking a short walk, I got a very sharp, burning, ripping pain on my lower right side. It only lasted a minute or so, so I didn't give it much thought. The next morning, I woke up and got out of bed to pee and this same pain returned only this time it was excruciating. I was pretty much unable to walk or even move. I was doubled over in pain. Putting any weight on my right leg or movement of any kind made pain worse. Peeing also made it worse. Not like a bladder infection pain, just made that spot hurt more. This is a rather long story, so I will get to the point : ). I ended up having a CT scan after two visits to the doctor. Initially he told me I was constipated, well, that wasn't the case. I cleaned everything out, and I do mean everything and the pain was still there. The only way I could get around was to double up on the pain meds. Not good or smart, but I was desperate. The CT scan showed nothing on the right side where the pain has been but on the left showed a "leaking hematoma". The nurse told me that it wasn't anything that they were too concerned about and that this pain I am experiencing is probably normal post op healing pain. I have had abdominal surgery before and never in my life experienced pain like this. Today, the pain is a bit better but now my whole lower abdomen hurts. (more than it has been hurting) I keep getting very bad cramps, which seems odd since i no longer have a uterus. I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced a pain similar to this and if so, if you were told what was causing it. Also, this "leaking hematoma"....is it realy nothing to be concerned about? And the fact that my pain is increasing seems strange to me. Is that something that anyone else has experienced? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I am feeling pretty alone with all of this. My doctor gives off the impression that I am being a baby. Keep in mind I am usually pretty good with pain and can handle quite a bit. But this is crazy and it feels like something just isn't right.
I also have been feeling just "not well" since yesterday. Kind of like I am sick but I dont have any real symptoms of being sick. No fever, no sore throat, etc. I feel like I am whining, but I am desperate to find out what is going on. I did not imagine that a week later I would be feeling worse than I did the day after my surgery.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to shed some light on this. Thank you so much.

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

Hi, you said the nurse said leaking hematoma. Did you discuss the CT with your doctor? What plan did your doctor outline for the next week or so? Are you still on pain meds?
Do you have a GP that you can be seen by to rule out a non-surgical cause of your feeling ill? I would associate your symptoms with the surgery but we're not doctors. If nothing else it is a theory so as not to step on toes but still get some answers.
Pain weight bearing in your right leg can be nerve compression or swelling. If the hematoma is on the left and is leaking maybe that is causing the irritation on the right.
I wish I had a simple answer for you. Continue to monitor your symptoms and keep in mind tylenol and Motrin (advil, alieve) all contain fever reducers. If your also on Narcotics check to see if yours also mixed with above. Two reasons. First you may be masking a fever so make sure you check frequently for fluctuations in temp even in normal ranges. Secondly, you do not want to overmedicate. Have you tried to alternate pain medications to keep a blood level for example tylenol every four hours with motrin every 6 or 8 hours with the Rx meds between. Of course go with what the doctor has prescribed and recommended. Maybe try cold packs and moist heat on the buttocks/hip and abdomen. Again if ok with doctor.
Do you have any bruising, redness, odor, tender spots to palpation. You can also try to isolate if abdominal pain is by palpating your stomach while lying down. Then compare how it feels when you pick your head up off the pillow. Picking your head up contracts the abdominal muscles and protects the viscera. It is an over simplification but may help to isolate whats going on.
Good luck. If you continue to worsen go to the ER. If no better tomorrow call the doctor and request to be reexamined and assert yourself to get a clearer cause of your pain. If they tell you it is normal post op pain -flatly ask them why they are failing to predict your pain management needs appropriately? Also ask the doctor if the CT films were 'good' 'clear' images or if there were shadows and artifacts. Sometimes diagnostic tests are not that great but a doctor will not tell you unless you ask. You can also find out who read the CT scan if it was the head radiologist, intern or whatever. Maybe call and pick up a copy of the report if you do not have one already. It is always good to have for your records.
Sorry I'm babbling. Hope your feeling better already or very soon.
Do not let the system make you feel like your crazy and its in your head. You are the only one who can say how you are feeling. If something feels off then something is off. Just because it is not readily identifiable doesn't mean anything. Hang in there

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

I also had an abdominal hysterectomy about a week ago I too am having alot of pain but I was experiencing alot of pain beforehand as I also have rectal cancer and have recently finished chemo & radiation. I hope that you find the answers to your pain soon. Keep at it check this site and any others and stay after your doctors. They told me that my pain was all in my head for over a year with my cancer and I just kept getting worse. Finally I was having bleeding and had doctor appointments scheduled but instead I went to an emergency room and told them that I was not leaving till I had answers. Then they took me seriously and within hours we found out that i had cancer. You know your body better then anyone else you know when something just isnt right so stay with it and dont give up until you feel better. When I had my first oncology appointment my husband said to her that he was glad that I did not wait another month to go to the ER and her response to him was I wouldnt have been here in a month to go to an ER so never give up on your own knowledge of your body. You will be in my prayers and I will let you know if I learn anything from the pain specialist. Good luck

Hi Laura - I think Hope09 and poppyspad have given you great ideas and advice. I agree about being assertive about your care. I've read several posts over the last few months of women going thru similar situations like yours. I'm guessing that because post-op pain is the norm after a surgery like this, it's often dismissed even when it's a sign of a complication. I hope you begin to feel better and if you don't, I hope that you can get your dr. to help you figure out what is going on. (((HUGS)))

Thank god you went to the ER poppyspad. It is so hard to remain persistent when the doctors are telling you nothing is wrong. Your story is tragic and a miracle. I'm happy you are hear to share it with us - thank you.
How are you feeling?

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

Hi,
I am also 1 week out and pain seemed better yesterday, but then tonight was hell. I was screaming in pain...I did wake up this morning with pain and diarrhea which hurt a lot and I think that's from the new diabetes meds i'm on, but tonight it happened all of a sudden..sharp pain in lower center, chills, took temp and it's 100 and it's been 97 since day 1. It also hurts when I pee...not spasm like infection but really hurts. I took two percocet an hour ago and doesnt feel much better... I've never heard of a leaking hemotoma, but I hope this pain goes away for you soon.

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

Seabreezelivin keep a close eye on your temperature the percocet will bring it down. From the time frame you're right in there for a UTI. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water. Cranberry tablets if you have to avoid the sugar. As a diabetic maybe you should call the doctor sooner rather than later. You could be reacting to the new medication or something else that is to complex for any of us to contemplate.
Give the doc a call tonight to be safe. OK?

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

I'm not as far along as you, so I can't comment on hyst recovery pain yet. However, I completely agree that you are the only one that knows how you are feeling. If I was in a situation where I didn't think my doctor was taking me seriously and I was post-op I would be headed for the ER. Don't take chances with your body.

Re: 1 wk post op-increasing pain-feeling alone and confused

101 fever on meds one week post op with comorbid medical conditions and pain. You need to call the doctor. He may tell you to wait till morning or go to the ER now.
Let me say. I hate the ER and I don't like to go while I'm in pain but you have to be taken care of. At least at the ER they can get tests ordered and completed with results ready by morning. Whatever you're brewing can be on its way to resolution if you go now.
Please call the doctor, Seabreeze NOW.
Who is home with you? If no one call a friend, family or neighbor let them make the call for you if necessary.
If your fever stayed at 100 waiting till morning seems some what reasonable but it is rising. Time for action.
Keep me posted OK
