American Red Cross Blood Drive

I understand that our blood will not be taken if we have had cancer within the past five years. Is there a time when, like today, our blood can be taken in an emergency situation? I had uterine cancer, but did not require chemo because it was "cured" by hysterectomy according to my doctor. I also was told I had "borderline" (or LMP) ovarian cancer. Again, I did not require chemo.

I was also greatly disturbed that I could not participate in any blood donations. Unfortunately, from what I understand if you have recently been diagnosed with any form of cancer, regardless of requiring further treatments or not, you will not be able to donate blood.

However, I did find a link on the MSNBC website with phone numbers that you can call and find our for sure if you qualify or not. It also lists other ways you can offer help.

We may not be able to donate blood for this tragedy but at least there is still things we can do to help in any way we can.
