Sore near IV location still?

Does anyone else still have a sore spot at or near their IV insertion? There's no visible bruising, however about an inch from the pin prick there's a very tender spot. In fact, just felt it and it's about an inch long in it's soreness, right over my wrist.

Any ideas what it could be? Or others have had this?

Re: Sore near IV location still?

I know that everytime the nurse gave me Toradol in the IV it burned like crazy! I have bruises that have faded to yellow/blue now and still have band-aid or tape glue on arms that is hard to get off. Had TVH on 9/10.

Re: Sore near IV location still?

I had problems with my IV's, they couldn't find veins very well. So, I ended up with 2. One was a back-up.

The main one was near the crease in my arm, toward the back. It was very uncomfortable! To answer to your concern, that area was swollen and sore for about 3 weeks. In fact, the vein was so swollen it felt like they had left a tube in me.

I'm sure it's normal but check with your doc just in case. Best wishes!

Re: Sore near IV location still?

I am still sore close to the IV at almost 3 weeks after surgery. I thing the veins get irritated too and need time to heal.
Hang in there, it will get better.

Mine was very irritated for a few weeks also. As long as it doesn't look like it is infected it sounds normal. They put a lot of medication through there & it does take a while for the vein to go down (at least in my case). Hang in there.

Me, too! Feels tender like a bruise.

Barbie- the Toradol stung like heck didn't it? But man, oh, man it did it's job well- didn't feel any pain and or as if I was drugged up.

Re: Sore near IV location still?

It is possible to irritate your veins with an IV. Try heat packs on them. It helps a lot.

Re: Sore near IV location still?

My IV was in my hand. It was sore and swollen for a couple of weeks. It's better now, but it took a while.

Re: Sore near IV location still?

Glad to know that's a normal thing. It's ok as long as I don't stick my hand in my pocket, or hit it against something. Guess a few more weeks of being careful with it are in order.

Re: Sore near IV location still?

I had IV iron a week before the op and ended up with edema in my hand. Had to get ultrasound to make it go away. Just below the iv spot for that incident, I still have a sore hard spot and it has been almost a month. I also had a hard lump further up the arm from that session. I got some pain relief with hot wet towel on the spot and once it was a bit better, some gentle massaging. The anesthetist told me it was the veins becoming irritated and hard.

The IV for the op had no problems, what a relief.
