Pain Meds-How Long is Too Long to Keep Taking Them?

OK, Ladies, this one's embarrassing. I am 6 weeks post-op from TAH/BSO and Umbilical Hernia repair and still take Vicodin every once in a while.

The first couple of weeks, I took 2-3 a day. I found the pain tolerable and the few Vicodin helped.

Well, as I said, I'm coming to the end of 6 weeks and still take them periodically. Most days I only take 1/2 or 1 a day. I have not taken any more than that on any given day. Tonight I took one because I've been very sore all day. I don't find that the pain is intolerable but Advil or Tylenol don't help. I could live with the pain but I keep finding myself not wanting to tough it out.

I think the thing I'm most concerned about is that they sort of make me "happy" and more energetic. I hope that is just because they take the pain away. It's not like I feel "high" or anything from them. Just better all over and definitely have less soreness and discomfort.

I have never been one to take pain meds before. I know lots of people who just love Vicodin and I know it can be addictive. When the prescription runs out, I'm sure I'll just forget about them but I think I will miss them.

I hate admitting this because I think I sound like a junkie or something but surely someone else out there can relate or help me get over this.

Thanks so much!

Re: Pain Meds-How Long is Too Long to Keep Taking Them?

peppermintpeggy,

I don't find that embarrassing at all! I am about 2 1/2 weeks post-op and I still take Percocet every night. I take 800mg of Ibuprofen once during the day and then the Percocet at night. It used to make me fall asleep pretty fast, but that effect now seems to have worn off. I think I am going to switch to just the Ibuprofen for both day and night for a couple of days and then the Percocet should work better again.

It sounds like you are doing what works for you. If the prescription runs out and it seems like you need a few more, ask your doctor. If he/she is unwilling to give you a full rx, ask for just a few to help you get through the next couple of weeks. It looks like you really aren't taking much right now. Just try putting a few more days in-between your doses and maybe you might find that really don't need any more at all!

Only you know what works for you. You are recovering from major surgery, so don't be too hard on yourself! Take care! Hugs!

Re: Pain Meds-How Long is Too Long to Keep Taking Them?

Don't feel embarrassed!!!
I'll go ahead and raise my hand and tell you that I LOVE PAIN PILLS. I feel SO much better when I took them. If I had an unlimited supply, I would probably be in trouble. I love them. THANK GOD my body shouted STOP IT at me (in the form of breaking out in hives and itching to the high heavens for a few days on end). There, do you feel better? I LOVE THEM. I was very, very sad when the hives came. I miss them. Tylenol or Advil do not have the same effect at all.
So, that being said.....you will probably miss them, but maybe you could try going 2 days without, 3 days without? It might feel better that way than just plain ole running out?
SMOOCHES! Of course you are not alone in this! I for sure was/am with you. I haven't had any good pain meds in 2 weeks now, but like I said, had I not had a reaction, I'm sure I would have taken them til they were allllllll gone. It's a good thing to keep tabs on, because they honestly are addicting. They contain narcotics. And that's one problem not worth having!
XOXOXOXOXXOXOXOXXO

Re: Pain Meds-How Long is Too Long to Keep Taking Them?

Most doctors are pretty restrictive in prescribing narcotics so your usage it probably within the limits of what your doctor comfortable with. Have you tried to take both an antiinflammatory (motrin, advil ect) along with tylenol. Taken regularly the combination may help to decrease the irritation that seems to be causing you the late day discomfort. Pain can diminish strength and can affect mood also. By controling the pain I can understand your feeling better with more energy. You are really the only one that can truly assess your pain level and need for the vicodan. It is good that you are aware it has addictive qualities. Maybe ask someone to hold on to the last of your pills. See how you make out asking when you feel you need one. If you find yourself wondering how to get some pills then maybe you are developing an issue. Knowledge allows you to react and respond to your bodies needs. Ignorance and ignoring things is what causes problems. I don't thing you have a problem at this time. You shouldn't not be embarrassed to need pain medication or ask questions about using it. Good luck

Since they are so hard to get now from doctors, you are probably not going to have to worry about getting addicted to them. They do make me feel better too & I would take them weekly too if I had them. No shame in wanting to feel better.

Re: Pain Meds-How Long is Too Long to Keep Taking Them?

Thank you all for your responses! I do feel better about my concerns. And, today I woke up with hardly any pain at all. I don't know why the last 2 days were so bad. I guess it's part of the healing.

I have no desire to take a Vicodin now so it really is a pain thing. If I have pain later and think I need one, I'll take one. If not, woo hoo!

My sisters are just awesome and so supportive! What would I do without you all?

Missy, you and I are in the same boat. In fact my doctor gave me a new script for percs when I went in on Wednesday. I don't expect he'll give me another next Friday. I am still taking them daily because my incision really hurts when I move around too much or sit up for too long. But I too was wondering how long I will have to take the pain meds. I do still have another refill on the Tylenol 3....
