Best Books to Prepare myself

I'm going in for a TAH in January 2010 and I'm looking for the best books that will prepare me for my future journey. I'm 29, so all these changes will impact my life, I'm assuming, a lot. Thanks!!

Re: Best Books to Prepare myself

Although there are many books specific to Hysterectomies, my favorite book overall for women (which includes some great information on hysterectomies as well) is "Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing", by Dr. Christiane Northrup.

I also have "The Woman's Guide to Hysterectomy: Expectations and Options" by Adelaide Haas and Susan Puretz. It goes through the process in pretty good detail. I rely on this for the more "technical" part of the process, and the first book (and of course this site) to help me through the emotional preparation (I still don't have a date, stilling deciding on exact process, which in turn determines which surgeon, and therefore how long the wait will be....).

Good luck to you!

Re: Best Books to Prepare myself

I ordered the free booklet available from this site and it helped me. I also read just about everything I could find on this forum, including the articles, pre-op and post-op threads, etc. For anyone who will be having their ovaries removed, I highly recommend "Sudden Menopause". It's been very enlightening.

Re: Best Books to Prepare myself

The sisters gave some good recommendations. The free guide from HS is chock full of info.

I would also like to suggest *The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy* by Dr. Lauren F. Streicher- wonderful, informative book and easy reading.

Re: Best Books to Prepare myself

I liked "Sudden Menopause" by Debbie DeAngelo. Many think its too simplistic and it doesn't go into massive detail but I needed quick information in an abbreviated form and I like the way she explains some of the supplemental information.

Good luck.

Re: Best Books to Prepare myself

The best book I found was 101 Hints for a Happy Hysterectomy by Linda Parkinson-Hardman. I plan to buy it for anyone I know who needs the op. She started by researching hysterectomy as a masters project after her own experience, then incorporated alot of women's advice. There is also a website similar to this one..but not as comprehensive. Best of luck
