pre-op bowel prep? TAH

It just occured to me that I wasn't given any info re: bowel-prep at my pre-op appt a week ago. I have read through all of the info I was given about getting ready and there is nothing in there either. Do some Dr's not request it? I'm a little concerned although I'm guessing if it is not in the printed material, the docs here don't feel it is necessary. Any opinions would be appreciated

Thanks
Mandy

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

I have not had my surgery yet (10-21-09) but I have read on here where some sisters DO NOT have to do the bowel prep. So since you have no info on your paperwork, I would assume you don't have to do one.....but you know what they say about assuming!

I would give your DR a call to find out if you are unsure.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

I just had a vaginal hysterectomy on 10/7. I had to be on a liquid diet on 10/6 & drink 10oz of magnesium citrate. On the morning of my surgery I had to give myself an enema and I could have nothing by mouth. It is possible that some doctors don't require you to do any type of prep. My doctor told me that she wanted my bowel as flat as possible because it would decrease damage in surgery should she be unable to do the surgery vaginally.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

Some dr's do not require you to do a bowel prep. My dr. has me doing a mini bowel prep. He said it's not necessary to do one but he does the mini because he doesn't want the intestines to be bloated for the procedure he's doing. I am having a LSH, (Lap Supracervical Hys). Because he is doing it that way he needs to see clearly. If you are having an open procedure I don't think it' necessary. However, if you are concerned call and ask about it.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

I think my Dr forgot to tell me too and I asked and he said I would be more comfortable (I didnt know WHAT he meant) so go ahead. I dreaded taking the magnesium citrate but I followed the suggestions on this site (drink it VERY COLD) and it wasnt bad going down. The results were timely and not much fun BUT I swear I have had the worlds easiest recovery and I think its mainly because I didnt have the gas that seems to cause so many others major pain right after surgery. Not sure how much the bowel prep helped but everything has been better than I could have ever expected. I would check w/ your Dr to see and if he says do it....go ahead and do it. I am 2 weeks post op and I am glad I followed his directions.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

My doctor never mentioned it, so after reading about it here, I asked her about it. She laughed and said I would not need it, and that there would not be any problems. She was right!!

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

I did not have to do a bowel prep. However, after my surgery I found out that I was supposed to have a light dinner (I had taco's not knowing that). It didn't hurt anything but I would call your doctor just to be sure. You don't want them to cancel because something was forgotten.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

I had my surgery on 9/17 and I did not have any bowel prep pre-op. It wasn't a problem.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

Thank you so much for all the replies. I may give the office a call just to be sure but it seems that it depends on the Dr. from what I have read here. I really appreciate all the replies.

Re: pre-op bowel prep? TAH

It really does depend on your dr. If he/she doesn't think it is necessary than i wouldn't do it.
