Weight lifting post hysto
I was an avid weight lifter until this past year and a half when a huge fibroid made my belly embarrassing and uncomfortable. Will I be able to lift weights like normal again eventually after my hysterectomy? My dr. says 'so long as you exhale on the press' but I'm not so sure. I do squats and leg presses w/pretty heavy weights (used to). Has anyone gone back to their normal gym workout afterward? Do I need to worry about pelvic floor issues and prolapses, etc.?

Re: Weight lifting post hysto
I workout intense as well. My dr. told me to hold off on anything that will cause my abs to contract for 6 weeks. So you pretty much know that I will not be doing any weight lifting for at least another month. Giving myself more time than he suggest. My girlfriend had TLH last year and she was back doing her normal exercise routine within 6 months. She hasn't had any problems at all. Listen to your body and go back into it slowly when your dr. releases you.

Re: Weight lifting post hysto
I was able to start back to my normal routine at 6 wks and had no problems. I found that I'd lost some strength but it didn't take too long to get it back. There is a thread on the post-op side about lifting restrictions that I've found interesting and disturbing. I wasn't told that I need to be concerned in the longterm but it seems that some women are.

Re: Weight lifting post hysto
I have my 6 week post op next week and I am PRAYING my doc releases me to get back into my weight training regime. I miss it!! I was doing P90X prior to having my surgery - my plan is to build back up to that level during Dec and Jan then start my P90X program back up on Feb 1st. I'm guessing she's going to do an internal and as long as my cuff is healed then I should be okay..?

Re: Weight lifting post hysto
I've been working with a physiotherapist who is a pelvic floor specialist to make the most of my new joined up pelvic floor. I have different issues because of the extra repairs than you who have had the hysterectomy for fibroids and endometriosis. The physio is giving me much more information about exercise and weights than the surgeon was able to - He is the best at cutting and stitching, but hasn't got the detail of recovery. The physio has said she would have had an even better idea of what I could do if she'd assessed my pelvic flloor strength and function before surgery.
All the best with your surgery and recovery.
