Surgery on Mon and wondering

I'm having TAH on Monday and I'm wondering once they've taken all my girly stuff out and I'm no longer producing estrogen will they just put a hormones patch on or pill they be giving you the estrogen pills how does that work. You would think the sooner I'm put the estrogen back in my system the better off I would be. How do they go about finding out what works best for you in the hormone area.Rather you should be using pills or compound or HRT what are the differences along with the benefits and the con's of each. Other question about epidural I have chronic pain for my neck and back and my pain specialist say to get an epidural because I have chronic pain although I really think having my gallbladder out 3weeks ago hurt like he--( he double toothpicks) I have a high pain tolerance anyway and that hurt like nobody's business. Thank for all input and thought in this matter...Love ya Vicki

Re: Surgery on Mon and wondering

I just had a TAV on 11/18 and my doc said we'll talk about hormones at the two week visit. Sounds okay to me as I'm doing just fine. I'm pretty comfortable considering and the pain is manageable. I'm up walking around without problems. I'm willing to wait and "see" how my hormones act in the near future.

Re: Surgery on Mon and wondering

Your body seems to run on stored hormones for a little while. For some people it might be immediate hot flashes but others cruise along for 2 - 3 weeks. If you have symptoms before your follow up, then call.

I suggest doing some reading about hormone options so you can discuss with your doc and ask him/her any questions.

Everything I have read about Oestrogen suggests that the sooner the replacement the better after BSO unless you have some contraindication which your Doctor will know about. Good luck, 2 big surgeries so close together must be really tough..

Re: Surgery on Mon and wondering

It seems that everyone's experience is different in the area of HRT. My doctor did not put me on HRT in the hospital but said that he would see if I had symptoms that required it. Since I didn't have hot flashes in the hospital, he decided I didn't need HRT. So far, I am still not on anything.

As for the epidural, I highly suggest it. I had one and it stayed in for 4 days while I was getting over the worst of the pain. It was a lifesaver!!

Best wishes to you!

Re: Surgery on Mon and wondering

I am 52 and my dr said at my age I may not need HRT ...so far I have had no problems...other than feeling colder than normal at times. The only time I get a hot flash is if I get scared lol I am doing good, am 2.5 weeks post op and feeling better every day... I rather not go on hormone therapy, but my dr also said if I felt I needed it or was having symptoms it would be just short term...my question is should I start taking calcium now... will have to ask that on my next post op visit..

Re: Surgery on Mon and wondering

I am 40 and my doc recommended Estrojel, which is an ointment you rub on once a day. The standard dose is two measured pumps, which works well for me but some people do need to adjust. So far, so good! The main reason I went on it was for bone density loss after you have your ovaries removed, and I am too young for that to start! I started one week postop.
