Family Support at Hospital

I have been reading a lot on hyster sisters web site. Read something about having a family member with you while you are still in the hospital, in case you need help. My daughter is worried about the same thing and thinks someone should be with me and they should take shifts. I feel the same way when I’m not the patient in the hospital. How important is it to have a family member be with you in the hospital after surgery?

Re: Family Support at Hospital

tmg -

My DH stayed with me until about midnight and then came back in the morning. I was only there for 1 night. It was good having him there in the evening because my catheter airlocked and I needed him to buzz and get me help when they didn't respond right away. My night nurse was fantastic and the floor was light in patients so I didn't need any other assistance untilt morning.

Re: Family Support at Hospital

My DH was with me for a little while. I went into surgery at 1p and didn't get into my room until almost 6p. I was really out of it, hooked up to a pain pump, so I don't really remember him being there very much. What I do remember is that the nurses were fantastic, and came to check on me, and got me anything I needed throughout the night- and always with a smile. By morning, I missed my DH and wanted him there emotionally, but by the time he got to the hospital, I was already being discharged. I remember feeling very lonesome and making phone calls late at night, and this helped. I also remember feeling that as much as I wanted my DH with me, I also knew all he'd be doing was sitting around watching me come in and out of sleep. I was blessed that the hospital staff were all fantastic, so it made me feel better that my DH would have a good night's sleep, which would make him more prepared to help me when I got home.

Wishing you well as you approach your surgery!

Re: Family Support at Hospital

I'm 2 weeks 2 days post op from TAH. My mom and hubby took turns, I was there for 2 nites and it was wonderful to have someone there during the day and nite. They helped me with pillows, going to the bathroom, getting water etc.

My nurses were great as well but it was very nice to have someone right there to help.

Good luck!

Re: Family Support at Hospital

My DH plans on being there with me, and I think that will be the best plan. I have a cousin and good friend who have said they'll stay if I want/need. Even the thought of having the surgery makes me want my DH though.

Re: Family Support at Hospital

We played it by ear, and things went well, the staff was nice to me and responsive, so I sent him home around 6pm. I only stayed one night and was discharged at 1pm the next day. I wanted him to go home and take care of people/pets/things there because I was doing fine. If I hadn't been doing fine he would have stayed.
