Unhappy - Help: 6 weeks post op major Rectocele repair and pubovag sling. Help: 6 weeks post op major Rectocele repair and pubovag sling.

Hi ladies, I am 6 weeks post op from my 2nd bladder procedure and major rectocele repair. Originally estimated a 3rd degree and after surgery doc said he could fit his entire hand in the prolapse. 3 day Hospital stay and came home with foley for 10 days due to retention.

The bladder portion has been great but the rectocele incision is causing a lot of pain still. I have a follow-up scheduled for Tuesday but would like to gauge how normal is all this. The first 3 1/2 weeks were really rough, the next week and a half I felt great and started increasing some activity, like walking around the house more. I have been EXTREMELY careful with what I do, I have done absolutely ZERO lifting, NO cooking, NO constipation. I have been a good girl!! I have a couple really short car rides.

1. This last week the pain is back with a vengeance. I had to get some stronger pain meds to cope (and took Excedrin PM to be able to sleep through the night.

2. I can feel the pain is localized to the incision on the posterior vaginal wall, it feels deep or high, the incision on the perineum is sensitive but not painful. I was unable to sit the first 3 weeks (not even in bed) then it went okay but now I can't sit at all without pain again. I do feel it a bit more when bowels are fuller - like before you need to go.

3. I've had this really yucky discharge AND a slight bloody discharge all this time. Which at first I attributed to the stitches dissolving but I had one WHOLE stitch come out (Loop intact) and heard two "pops" today when I sneezed. I have only had this one stitch come out and I drummed up the courage to feel just inside and there are still alot of sutures. No urine leaking like before but in the I do get a very strong urine smell in the morning or after a few hours after changing pads.

I am suppose to go back to work on Wednesday for 4 weeks of half days. I guess I just expect to be further along by now.

Thanks for the shoulders.

Re: Help: 6 weeks post op major Rectocele repair and pubovag sling.

Hi Nicole,
I found that the posterior repair took quite a bit longer than 6 weeks to get over and all my stitches were out at 4 mths.

WOW 4 Months??? Why don't the docs tell you these things. When you ask them about recovery they say 6 weeks. Then they always say no intercourse for 6 weeks. DO they have any idea how painful this is? More like none for 6 months! I feel so numb from all of this, this is surgery number 4 in the last 2 years.

Re: Help: 6 weeks post op major Rectocele repair and pubovag sling.

I had a good moan about how much I was still hurting at my 6 week appointment and my urogyn remarked that the posterior repair is the surgery he does that goes on hurting the most and the longest.

Have you tried ice packs on your perineum - that gets through to the site of the posterior repair as well.

I find my heating pad helps and staying off the bottom, so I end up laying on my side all the time. I am worried that I have to go back to work this Wednesday even if it is only 4 hours a day. I have a desk job.

Re: Help: 6 weeks post op major Rectocele repair and pubovag sling.

I had my checkup today, at 7 weeks. All is on track with the recovery which makes me feel much better. I received a silver nitrate treatment..UGH. I asked him to please remind other patients of how slow this recovery is. The pain I've been having is due to stitches still there which do not dissolve till about 8 weeks. Since the driving did me in, he would like me to keep from driving for a couple more weeks. I had alot of scar tissue and he said accompanied with my young age it was a technically challenging surgery. He estimated it will be a full 12 weeks until I feel my normal self again.

Back to work on Monday for a few weeks of halfdays.
