8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

8 weeks post TAH

I had intermittent sharp pain in the left side from pelvic bone to belly button area. Started at week 4-5 post op. sometimes the pain came and went much like a spasm and couldn't be ignored. this has changed to increased overall tenderness and after very light exercise or swimming mainly on the left side but can radiate to the right across the belly button area. I also have a bearing down pressure when I urinate which is less frequent but but gets better/worse with degree of bladder fullness. *** Pac report indicates a possible infection (critically high in white blood cells, epith cells and leukocytes) however no treatment was done and most recent urine test came back neg. Awaiting third test and should get results today.

Recurring midline back pain has lessened in frequency however still far to frequent and is a 6 to 7 on the pain scale, painkillers are only partially effective. Strongly reactive to any restrictive clothing such as a bra or waistband, when on my feet too long or when constipated. I have always had this but has worsened since the TAH Sitting with heating pad most effective to obtain relief.

Burning pain from front top left rib to back left rib during IB flare up.
-IBS has changed to extreme constipation i.e. sitting on toilet throwing up in a bucket. Pain is a #8 to 9. Was like this 28 years ago when I was pregnant but now after the TAH this recurring constipation is a constant in my life.

Finally found a Doctor who is willing to find out what is going on and has ordered bloodwork, urine test, upper GI Series, an Ultrasound and mentioned refering me to a surgeon. His office called again today and wanted to know if I needed any pain meds and stating my Dr is unsure how to proceed so wanted to know if I wanted a referral to a surgeon. I'm not sure what is going on here? Why a surgeon? What is he thinking?

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

Actually, I just spent the weekend crying because of almost the same pain. TAH on 11/5. For the past almost 2 weeks I have had a lot of naseau and loose BM's. This weekend, I started getting a pain that was directly below my belly button that felt like stabbing. Then it would run across my belly button the length of my abdomen. I've had bad cramping/pinching pains on both my left side and right with pain shooting down my thigh. Not sure what is going on but going to the Dr. in the morning. I wish I had an answer for you now but I'm in the same boat. Will write more after my appointment. Hope you feel better.

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

Had similar symptoms and my GI doc. is doing a colonoscopy to see if the spasming bowel is due to a blockage from scar tissue (adhesions.)

Keep us updated.

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

I have had simular pains, while they were noticable, no where near like what you are saying, and only lasted a couple of days, figured it was just part of recovery. I really can't offer any advice, just hopes that they figure it out very soon, and that you get out of pain. Oh, I would think, that maybe referring you to a surgeon, would be to maybe do exploratory surgery. Alot of times if nothing shows up in blood work or ultra sound, that might be there only other option. Did you have a contrast ultra sound? Maybe an MRI, so much more in detail.
Was your bloodwork done w/ the same doc that wants to send you to a surgeon? Just curious if you white cell count was so high, why they wouldn't do anything???? I think I would be insisting, or finding another doc. I hope you get better soon, please keep us updated. Best wishes

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

Sorry it took so long for reply. Dr. thought maybe it was an infection. They did blood work, xray to check for blockage, etc. Everything was fine. The pains have subsided a bit, but the feeling of being sick to my stomach is still here. He said it is just part of the process. When you have been on pain meds and then get off, your body has to adjust. Same for major surgery. He seemed confident in his answer. Depending on your labs and Dr., exploratory may be the best option.

Coming off pain meds can make you sick to your stomach. Interesting they did an xray to check for blockage. My GI doc. said he needs to do a colonoscopy to be able to see if I have that (and my specialist agrees this is the only way to know if there is a blockage.). But every doc. is different I guess.

Take care,

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

Hi JVL-
Curious if you went to the doc yet? I've had constipation on and off since this surgery, never a problem in my life before. I can understand for the first few weeks after it when you are getting the anethesia out of your system, on pain meds and inactive. It has been over 9 weeks now and I am getting really frustrated. I have not had any pain meds since 3 days after surgery. I have been on stool softners since about the 2nd or 3rd week and now they do not seem to make a difference anymore. My family doc told me to try Miralax which I started thurdsay. I went to the bathroom on friday.....not much and now here I am.....full of poop. I took milk of magnesia today and barely anything has come out and I am so bloated that my belly button incision and area on tummy to the left of it hurt because it is being so stretched out. I am very frustrated to say the least and do not want to end up impacted and having worse problems.

Re: 8wks post-op- Belly Button pain, back pain constipation = surgeon referral?

urine test came back neg and I don't go for the upper GI Series, an Ultrasound until the 21.

I know exactly what you mean! Constipation and gas are now a constant in my life. I am on daily stool softeners and using suppositories regularly. I am afraid to take laxatives due to the high risk of the side effect of the bowels becoming too reliant on them and causing a life long problem. I have gone from IBS issues that affected me 3 times a month and feeling like my guts where being ripped apart to being constantly constipation and feeling the same 3 times a week. I don't believe it is from residue pain meds as I was off narcotics by the beginning of week 2 and off over the counter meds since the end of week 3. I have been swimming almost daily and relatively active so I don't believe my activity level has anything to do with it either.

The pain around the belly button and the pressure spasm when I void comes and goes so just when I think I am making a big issue out of nothing it returns to worry me again.

I too wish I had some answers so appreciate your renewing this thread so that anyone else having these issue might respond with their experience.
