How do I cough?

I have a lot of phlegm in my throat and can't cough it up, due to the excruciating pain it causes in my tummy. What suggestions do you recommend?

Re: How do I cough?

Hold a pillow snugly over your incision and tummy while you cough. That should help.

Re: How do I cough?

My mom (a retired OB nurse and hyster survivor herself) said to lie on your side like a log, hold a flat, firm pillow to your stomach and cough gently but firmly that way. She said it will hurt but is safer than trying to cough upright.

Re: How do I cough?

A pillow helped me for laughing and coughing.

Re: How do I cough?

I would hold the pillow over my tummy too. I would also do a deep gurgle/hack to help the cough ahead of time( do the gurgle/hack a couple of times), then cough lightly. This will help bring the mucus up so you don't have to cough as hard. It hurts a lot less. Good Luck.
