Urge to urinate all the time- normal?

I had my TAH on Dec 3rd and was home from hospital on Dec 8th. Since Thursday I've been constantly feeling as if I need to pass urine desperately, even if I've just been to the toilet. Picked some antibiotics from our family doctor on Friday in case of infection but they haven't helped. Is this a normal post-op problem and if so when is it likely to resolve- it's driving me crazy! Or should I be worried that something has gone wrong?

the exact same thing happened to me- they did a culture to make sure there was no infection- and there wasn't! So, i can say, yes it happened to me... it went away a few days later. good luck- if it continues, i would call the doc

Re: Urge to urinate all the time- normal?

Hi (((Kumquat)))

The bladder really goes through a lot during hysterectomy since it is moved around to gain access to the uterus. This is why many of us feel like we have an infection even when we do not. I found that using Azo Standard really helped with bladder spasms. It is widely available in drug stores. I also found that retaining urine for as long as possible helped. Sometimes we need to retrain our brains that there is not an urgency to go. This is challenging since it is tempting to run to the bathroom once the spasm starts. Hope you get past this soon!

Re: Urge to urinate all the time- normal?

I had my TVH in April 2009 and experienced the same feeling you describe. It was more annoying than painful. I talked to my doctor and after confirming there was no UTI he prescribed Enablex to help with the spasms. He told me they had to peel the bladder away from the uterus during surgery and the bladder is traumatized and has to settle down. The Enablex worked great. He said I wouldn't have to be on it for long. At about 4 months I just stopped taking it and I was fine; probably could have stopped it sooner, but I wanted to make sure everything was healed. This worked for me, you might want to discuss it with your doctor. I hope the rest of your recovery goes well. Take Care of yourself.

Re: Urge to urinate all the time- normal?

I had my surgery on the 2nd of December and have the same feeling. Thought it was a UTI but that medicine didn't help much. I still feel the urge to go after I have gone. Thanks for the post on this topic...its good to know I'm not the only one feeling that way!

Re: Urge to urinate all the time- normal?

My surgery was also 2 December. The main reason for me having the surgery was because a large fibroid was bouncing on my bladder and I experienced the sensation of wanting to empty by bladder constantly. Slightly frustrating that that the sensation has returned after the op! I can't wait to feel 100% and be able to say like many of my friends "having a hysterectomy is the best thing I have ever done". It doesn't feel that way at the moment and I have a lot of time on my hands feeling sorry for myself and I feel a burden to my family. I can't believe that it has been nearly two weeks since my op. I am signed off work for six weeks and can't imagine being well enough to return to work then. When does it get better???
