11 days until pre op 17 days until surgery

I was doing okay with the fact of having a hysterectomy, but now I just feel really overwhelmed. My mom was in the hospital earlier this week and was diagnosed with COPD and has recently moved in with us. She was planning to stay here from my surgery date until 6 weeks past to help take care of the kids and now she is not 100% and I am afraid she will not be at the time of surgery. My Dh has been sick the past few days with the Flu. My Brother has stayed the past few nights to help me out with the kids and my mom since my Dh is under the weather. He has offered to come and stay to help take care of me and my mom after my surgery, but for some reason I dont feel as comfortable as I did knowing my mom and Dh was going to take care of everything. I mean I love my brother and appreciate everything he is offering but I am really particular about things and I am afraid he will do it and I will feel the urge to get up and do it my way and hurt myself. I also feel like I am "nesting" in a way. I woke up this morning and completely cleaned my kitchen from top to bottom (and it was not even dirty) we also went grocery shopping and got a months worth of groceries so I will not have to worry about that until Feb1st. I dunno I just feel like I cannot prepare myself enough for this surgery. Is there anything I should do before surgery so I am not trying to do it afterwards?? I guess I just also need some reassurance that everything is going to be okay.

Re: 11 days until pre op 17 days until surgery

I think that sometimes we are so used to being the caregivers that we forget how to sit back and relax and accept help
I was worried about that myself but learned that it was ok if everything was not perfect and "my way" for awhile. Your most important job after surgery is to heal. Please allow everybody who is willing to give you as much help as possible. You concentrate on you - you're worth it!

I hope that your mom and DH are back in tip-top health soon so that you won't have to worry about them.

Nesting is normal IMO, I know that I did it too! Getting the groceries ahead was a good idea. I stocked up on easy to heat and eat foods, juices, jell-o, snacks and that really helped.

Best wishes.

It is always hard for the caregiver to take care of themselves and be number 1 for a bit.
Take all the help that is volunteered and if that is not enough, start "voluntelling".
Everything will turn out okay if you allow yourself the down time that you need to heal properly.
Your DH should be well over the flu before your surgery and if your mom is on a new medication for the COPD she should be stabilized by then as well. (my DH was diagnosed with COPD recently and he was put on meds that started working within days to help)
This site is a great place to come when you feel overwhelmed and need answers or need to vent.
Hugs,
Suzanne

Re: 11 days until pre op 17 days until surgery

Check the articles on pre-op checklists, those helped a lot. Nesting is perfect. Make sure your recovery space at home is totally ready, clean sheets, side table close to the bed so you can put your water and things there, and the bed should be ready for you to get in it when you get back. The first day after the surgery, while you are still in the hospital, it feels overwhelming, but each day you feel tons better than the day before, so just hang in there. You'll do fine. Hang in there.
