Pre-op Today and Good Tips From Good Friends

Had my pre-op xray and EKG today. Had an appointment at 8:30am. Very elderly volunteer at check in desk placed my paperwork in the walk-in pile and I ended up waiting 3 hours vs the one hour the nurse promised it would be. Sigh! Trying to miss minimal work right now since I will be out for a while. Hope all the test go well as I really am scared that they will cancel my date for some reason or another.
On the plus side the girls at work gave me some great tips today-4 ladies two 30 years post hyster and 2 ladies 4-5 years post.

1. Get a mumu. Loud and bright and pretty but not low cut. The girls said that the tummy swelling was easier to deal with when they had their mumu's on and girdle panties.
2. Take a pillow with you everywhere. The girls said to keep on my lap in the car, when on the couch and take it to bed to wedge between me and hubby. Helps cushion any of the accidental bumps and nudges from kids, dogs, cats and hubby.
3. Apparently I should buy stock in gas aids. I was told to stock multiple brands in case one doesn't work well for me. The girls felt this was the worst part of recovery.

Thought I'd share the tips since I am so fortunate to have so many hyster sisters that I work with.

Re: Pre-op Today and Good Tips From Good Friends

Thanks for sharing and best wishes to you on your surgery and recovery! I wore a bright orange nightgown in the hospital (after begging my nurse to let me change into it) and it made me feel so cheery!

A mumu! AWESOME idea!!!!

I especially love the idea of a loud and colorful one. I am usually a pretty flamboyant person anyway, so a bright loud mumu would just help me scream "I'm a princess, pamper me!"

If nothing else, I can get more attention!!!!

At pre-op yesterday, the nurse said that my GYN did her hysterectomy a few years ago and it went very well.
That was reassuring.

Re: Pre-op Today and Good Tips From Good Friends

The oversize gown has become my new best friend, or maybe it is the extra pillows. I'm a side sleeper and without the pillows it couldn't be done.

Unless you're anticipating a very long stay in the hosptial, you can skip the make-up and shampoo so many recommended. I was in overnight. Just like a hotel, they provided small bottles of that stuff along with a toothbrush which was most welcome. And since I was only in overnight I waited until I was home to take a shower. That way I could take my shower in peace without a bunch of nurses hovering over me.

The two things I wish I had taken with me were a hand held mirror (I couldn't find all of my incisions) and hard candy. My mouth was terribly dry and the water and ice didn't help. I did discover the nurses would bring me all of the popcicles I wanted and they helped the most.

Re: Pre-op Today and Good Tips From Good Friends

My surgeon warned me that 50% of her patients go home with catheter. This make me nervous; I want to be the other 50%! I'll be having the daVinci TVH with A&P repair in February and want to do everything possible to leave that catheter in the hospital.

Re: Pre-op Today and Good Tips From Good Friends

Almost 7 weeks post op TAH/BSO. Loved lots of pillows in chairs, larger sized sweat pants, and towels and clothes heated up in the dryer to put on after a shower. And read all the posts on this web site, it was a blessing for me to have all the advice everyone gives.
