Rectocele Surgery

Can anyone tell me how you prepare for a rectocele surgery. Is there alot of bowel prep etc. I know that I have one and will need surgery in the near future. I am scared to death. I am just coming off of a TVH with TVT bladder sling and now have overactive bladder. This is not what I imagined in my retirement years. I thought at 14 weeks post-op I would be my old self, not anticipating something else coming down the pike.

Re: Rectocele Surgery

I had a rectocele repair along with my TVH. My doctor did not have me do a prep or do anything special to prepare for the repair. The TVH was the easy part, but the rectocele repair was painful for me to sit for several weeks, and took some time to heal. Bowel movements were not easy either. I would wait till fully recovered before having this, since your body is going through so much right now. I did not feel like my normal self from the TVH and the repair for several months. Surgery is a shock to the body and takes some time to heal properly from all that is done.

I had my repair in '03 and it is still good and glad I did it.

Best wishes on your post op recovery and feeling better.

Re: Rectocele Surgery

Suzy's advice is sound, wait until fully recovered before you jump into the pool again.

One other thing...if you are sexually active and want to stay that way, measure the circumfrence and length of your partner while he is fully erect. Take those measurements to your surgeon, make sure that you aren't tightened up too much. That is my problem, my lingering problem for which I have had a total of 4 surgical revisions to try to fix (and it isn't fixed yet). I told my original surgeon "my husband is well endowed". Well.....that wasn't a scientific measurement, what I should have done was to measure. On the funny side, I now know that what my original surgeon thought was well endowed was actually pretty skimpy, but that doesn't help me when I am hurting and tearing.

Benjamin Franklin said "A stich in time saves nine". I really get it, now. Good luck to you.

Re: Rectocele Surgery

Thanks for the advice...............I have a question did your symptoms present with a felling of a bulge on the inside of the vagina. I don't know if I am making sense, I feel a bulge on both sides, outside of the vagina. Could this be the vaginal walls collapsing. Hopefully this makes sense.

Re: Rectocele Surgery

You need to go to a urogynecolgist who can diagnose what is wrong and fix it.
