Back to school tomorrow

I was cleared by my doctor to go back to school tomorrow, but he said I couldn't carry my books for another 2 weeks...which includes being able to pull a rolling backpack. I go to medical school so the books are large, plus I have back-to-back classes from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon every day. So it really isn't an option for me to run back and forth to my car to drop off one book for one class and then pick up another for the next class.

I asked my doctor what he suggested I do and he chuckled and said doctors are faced with situations every day that need to be figured out and I needed to use my critical thinking skills that I will be using as a doctor. HUH? I have had such a nice recovery with the exception of getting the flu a week after surgery, now I need to figure out how to keep that recovery good.

Any suggestions?

Re: Back to school tomorrow

Are there any other students in your classes that would volunteer to pull your backpack for a week or two? If they have the same classes as you do , anyway.

Otherwise, most schools have help for those with disabilities... you might explain your situation to them and see if they have a solution for your temporary issues.

Or, if they will let you bring a packhorse.... lol

You could also explain your situation to your professors and ask if you can only bring copied pages out of the books (if they will tell you what pages you will need). You could also scan the pages into your laptop and bring that.

Re: Back to school tomorrow

Go to/call disability services at your school. They will help you to make accomodations. Perhaps your prof will keep a book in the room for you or another student can share with you. My son was extremely ill for 3 months while away at school and because of the American's with Disabilities Act, the school was required to make accomodations (and were very happy and helpful as well).

Re: Back to school tomorrow

Thank you! Those are really helpful suggestions. I guess my critical thinking skills aren't as honed as they should be because I was really worried about what I was going to do.

I really wouldn't feel comfortable asking any of my classmates, although there are one or two that I really like and get along with, it is just so competitive...it is hard to explain. I think using my laptop or keeping a book with my prof's will be the best idea.

Thanks again!

Re: Back to school tomorrow

You could ask a friend to keep your books with them and bring them in for you? But, if you talk to your teacher, usually they have extra text books they keep in the class, you may be able to use these until you can carry your own

Re: Back to school tomorrow

Glad I could help. This is exactly what the ADA is for and the colleges hire people to assist in medical situations. You pay all those student fees, here's a chance to get value for your dollar.

Oh! I almost forgot. He also got a school issued handicapped placard because his energy level was so poor. He could park out in front of all his classrooms for the entire semester. This might be helpful for you as well.
