Milk of mag or miralax?

Which would be better to use to prevent constipation? Meaning...less cramping.

Just got home from hospital today, and my husband has me laughing so hard right now, I'm crying in pain.

Re: Milk of mag or miralax?

I'm a miralax fan. My doctor recommended it.

Re: Milk of mag or miralax?

I was told to stay away from laxatives - even gentle ones. They create gas which - if you haven't felt it yet is WOW - take you breath away - painfully. I used Colace (a stool softener). You can take up to 3 a day. I took 2 every morning before I ate. I am not going to say that there weren't times when I was sitting and waiting, but with the increased fiber in my diet, just normal gas was a tear jerking experience.

Re: Milk of mag or miralax?

Please do not use laxatives unless your own doctor instructs you to. Many laxatives work by making the bowel contract, which can be painful; most work by causing the bowel to retain water in the stool, which can cause dehydration. These things can be painful and dangerous in someone who is newly post op.

Much better to use the stool softeners and try dietary means combined with drinking lots of water and taking frequent short walks to get things going. Expect that it may take several days; the average time from surgery to the first bowel movement is about five days.

I found warm prune juice, ice cream, strong coffee and bran muffins to be very effective. Some women swear by McDonald's hamburgers (or other greasy foods).

Best wishes for a smooth recovery.

I use colace stool softeners when I had to and add ground flaxseed to food to make sure everything flows without having to push. Coffee will definitely make me go and keep the gas-x handy to prevent the gas pains.

Re: Milk of mag or miralax?

I used stool softeners, lots of water and walking. Could not take the pain anymore so I took milk of mag. Felt wonderful since. No matter what remember lots of water and walking. It will hurt the first time no matter what you do, but you will feel better after.
