Question about Activity after Surgery

So, today I went and finshed signing paperwork and getting my pre-op appt. I am having either a TVH or LAVH depending on how it goes. The nurse was telling me that when I go home, I am not supposed to "go to bed" but move around, take short walks and that I can do easy things like make a sandwich, etc. I just assumed I would need to rest in bed and doze alot. She did say that I would tire out easily. What exactly do most people feel like doing after this type of surgery? I am getting a spinal with duramorph for pain control that is supposed to last for about 72 hours. Thank you for your input!

Re: Question about Activity after Surgery

I took a 3 hour nap as soon as I got home from the hospital, but after that I barely napped. I laid down when my body was tired or hurting (you'll know!) but otherwise I was sitting up using the computer, reading, watching a movie, etc. I also got up and walked around as much as possible.

Each night, I didn't have any trouble falling asleep, and I barely needed pain meds. I think part of it was luck, and part of it was because I kept active (slowly and reasonably) during the days.

Thank you december14! It is so good to hear positive stories like yours! When the nurse told me this today it really lifted my spirits because I was thinking I would be down alot more. Now you have made me feel even better! You had your surgery on my birthday, by the way.

Re: Question about Activity after Surgery

I had a TAH and the pre-op nurse told me that I should not use this as an excuse to become bedridden. She said get up and be productive after I got home from the hospital.
I only took a nap a few times during the 6 week recovery. I did small things like rinse the dishes, fold laundry, light dusting, and some cooking the first couple of weeks. After that I eased back into some normal things except vacuuming.
I would say listen to your body first and foremost. Rest when you need to. Everyone recovers differently so do what's best for you.
