Surgery Postponed

Well, there I was all prepped and waiting to enter the operatiing room....and waiting....and waiting! Seems that all the hospital rooms were full, so there was no place to send the post-surgery patients who were recovering. Which meant that the post-surgery patients in the operating rooms had no recovery room to go to, so they were recovering in the operating rooms. Which meant that those patients who were prepped for surgery had no place to go, so they were laying around on gurneys wherever there was room to put them! I was sent to OR at 2:00 p.m., and since the OR's were filled I was put in a maintenance room for four hours!

Everyone was really nice, and they kept checking on me to make sure that I was comfortable. One nice orderly even provided me with a magazine to read. Eventually, at 5:30 p.m. my Dr. told me that it might take 3 or 4 m o r e hours to get me in the OR and he gave me the choice of staying or going home and coming back the next day (today). Of course, that was the option I chose. It still took another hour before I could get my I.V out, get my clothes and leave. It was close to 7:00 when I walked out! Everyone was very apologetic about the situation. I simply said to all of them, "See you all tomorrow!" I've been told that there were about a dozen other people besides me in the same situation!

I know that this is a bizarre occurrance, but has anyone else had their surgery cancelled at the last minute, and then rescheduled? I hate having to do it all over again, but at least I'm past the pre-surgery jitters.

And I thought I had it bad because my surgery was delayed by 2-1/2 hours. Was scheduled for 1:30 surgery, and didn't go in until 4:00. I was very hungry and thirsty as I couldn't eat or drink after midnight the night before, but at least I had my surgery on the scheduled day!!

Good luck to you.

I can sympathize with you Cherie, but my situation wasn't as bad. I was all ready to go for a Monday morning TVH Sept. 17 when I got a call Sunday evening, the 16th, that my surgeon's father passed away and I would have to reschedule. Being that I was already off work on sick leave, I flipped thinking I'd have to wait a month for rescheduling. I ended up asking for one of the other surgeons in my doc's group and you know what, I ended up liking him even better than the doc I was scheduled with in the first place. You never know - sometimes things happen for a reason and sometimes it turns out better in the end. Regardless, sorry to hear about your trouble. It must have been totally nerve wracking waiting all that time and worrying. Anyway, best of luck to you - the worst part is almost over.

Wow Cherie sounds like a similar experience I had awaiting gallbladder surgery--it wasnt a military hospital was it? Sounds like you have a great attitude about it though! Good luck!
